Like taking jewels from the ocean, Without relying on a skilled captain, it is impossible. Similarly, without relying on a Lama, one cannot realize the meaning. The Lama is the embodiment of all Buddhas, The eighty-four thousand teachings are the Lama's words, The compassion of vast Dharmata pervades all. Without the Lama, there is no Buddha Dharma, Therefore, relying on the supreme Lama accomplishes. To benefit others by liberating them from the state of Dharmakaya, In the impure perception of those to be tamed, He manifests in Rupakaya and makes appearances. In the uncertain and various thoughts of oneself, Do not look at past faults, but contemplate virtues. Whatever the body does, see it as good, Whatever is said, believe it to be true and follow accordingly. Believe that whatever is thought is known. Offer all possessions without attachment or clinging. With body, speech, and mind, disregard life and turn towards the Lama. By serving and offering whatever pleases him, One will uphold the Buddha Dharma in this age. One who has wrong views towards the Lama, breaks vows, is a child of Mara, Experiences obstacles in this life, and the place is inauspicious. After death, they go to the Avici hell. Therefore, by relying on the Lama with respect, Like sandalwood and camphor touching emit fragrance, Merely by relying and respecting, blessings arise, The meaning of self-arisen Dharmata effortlessly dawns. The essential instructions of the Lama who possesses essence, Are given only to a worthy disciple who fears, Turns away from the worldly and samsaric dharmas. Not more than one, seven, or nine. Abandon all worldly activities, In a deserted charnel ground, mountain cave, or solitary place, Teach the dharma that generates impermanence and renunciation. Through skillful instructions, realize the meaning of wisdom. Through wise instructions, realize the meaning of skillfulness. Realize the great wisdom that is non-dual and free from extremes. Like water drawn from the Wala River, There is no possibility of error in the view of Dzogchen. The preliminary instructions place the mind on the scale of mindfulness. Like the sun rising in a cloudless sky, The meaning of Dharmata is clearly manifest. The main instructions establish the mind in its true nature. Like a guest returning home from a journey, The subsequent instructions repeat the result, By practicing virtue in the beginning, middle, and end, Dzogchen is effortless, spontaneously accomplished, and manifestly enlightened. Thus it was spoken. From the lineage of the Dzogchen Cutting Through, All Liberating King, the essential instructions.

That concludes the eighth chapter of the summary. Self-Arisen Wisdom Vajra again requested: E MA HO! I beseech the Bhagavan, the spontaneously accomplished, uncompounded glory, to explain the three essential points of the pith instructions. How does one initially demonstrate the key points of the preliminary practices? Please explain this meaning to the assembled retinue. Thus he requested. Then, the Bhagavan declared: First, there are two types of preliminary practices: common and uncommon. The common preliminary practice is to the lama, the object of refuge, with the thought of attaining the unsurpassed result for oneself and others. With heartfelt faith and respect through the three doors, the embodiment of all Sugatas, to the primordial Buddha, the protector of beings, the supreme refuge, until myself and all sentient beings attain Buddhahood, I take refuge with reverence in body, speech, and mind. By reciting these words and their meaning, one makes the supplication of taking refuge, clearing obstacles and receiving blessings. To all mother sentient beings dwelling in the six realms, with compassion that exchanges one's own happiness for the suffering of others, may they attain happiness, be free from suffering, and swiftly attain Buddhahood. Generate the supreme Bodhicitta of equality, from which arises the benefit of others and the welfare of beings, liberated from self-interest. Second, the uncommon preliminary practice, concerning body, speech, and mind, is the instruction on distinguishing between samsara and nirvana. The distinction of the body is circumambulation, and sitting in the vajra posture while tightening the body with effort. This generates aversion to the body of samsara. The distinction of speech is Hūṃ(藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) Phaṭ(藏文:ཕཊ,梵文天城体:फट,梵文罗马拟音:phaṭ,汉语字面意思:啪), not speaking, speechless, holding the breath forcefully. This reverses attachment to the speech of samsara. The distinction of mind is weariness, focusing on a fixed target without distraction. This generates aversion to the mind of samsara. Tightening with effort is the suffering of samsara. This distinguishes samsara. Afterwards, abandon all activities and efforts of the body. In a state of non-action, the clinging to the body vanishes. When clinging arises, happiness arises in the body. Abandon all speech and expression, the labor of speech. In a state of speechlessness, the clinging to speech empties. Abandon all aims and objectives, the labor of mind. In a state of aimlessness, the clinging to mind vanishes. Body, speech, and mind naturally proceed in ease. Loosening and relaxing is the bliss of nirvana. Through loosening, liberation distinguishes nirvana. Through this, the individual perfects the accumulations and blessings are infused. Tightening with effort, and then loosening and relaxing.
