Clinging to meditation obscures, preventing the sight of the Dharmakaya. Meditating on emptiness while grasping at nothingness, Is bound by the duality of grasper and grasped, due to the presence of meditation. Like stirring muddy water, causing it to become muddy again, To dispel thoughts, one cultivates thoughtlessness, which only stirs them up. Clinging to thoughts, one is ruined by meditating on emptiness, Like stirring muddy water, causing it to become muddy again. Like leaving muddy water undisturbed, allowing it to clear, By not manipulating appearances and not following after them, one is liberated. When the nature of mind, without basis or root, is understood, And the clinging to reality is destroyed, appearances cannot bind. Like the moon in water, appearing yet simultaneous with emptiness, Even the sudden, spontaneously arising thoughts and appearances, Are clearly liberated in the very moment of their appearance. The nature of mind is empty, self-liberated, without foundation. To the meaning of no foundation, the name "emptiness" is given, Like the characteristics of a barren woman's child. Empty in name, without substance in reality, Not empty, but clearly manifest. Though manifest, without substance, like a flower in the sky, Only appearing, without an object to grasp. Primordially empty, primordially liberated, spontaneously perfect. Not established as one, not separate from many, Conventional and ultimate are divided into appearance and emptiness. Like someone with diseased eyes seeing two moons in the sky, Those with wrong views perceive appearance and emptiness as two. Like someone with cataracts seeing hairs in the sky, Unblemished eyes see nothing at all. Conventional delusion appears as existence and non-existence, But in the ultimate state, there is neither existence nor non-existence. The ultimate is non-dual, free from extremes, beyond expression, Not an object of appearance, thought, meditation, or knowledge. All understandings of phenomena as empty, Are partial understandings, not the true meaning of reality. In the emptiness of one's own mind, non-dual and free from extremes, How can emptiness be meditated upon with emptiness? Just as the eye cannot see itself, The object of meditation and the meditator are not established as two. Self-arising, self-liberated, spontaneously born, co-emergent. Like a snake's knot, it is naturally liberated. Not created by causes, liberated in its very nature. Not destroyed by conditions, liberated without change. Not clinging to emptiness, liberated in its self-luminosity. Not established as a thing, liberated without birth. Not established as existent, liberated without birth. Not empty as non-existent, liberated without cessation. Not falling into any side, liberated as undifferentiated unity. Not established as one, liberated as free from extremes. Not being what it is, not being what it is not, liberated. Not artificial, spontaneously perfect.
