The Twelfth Chapter: Ascertaining All Knowable Dharmas. The true nature of reality is without difference, The essence of emptiness is unceasing, Whatever diverse appearances arise, Are merely self-arising, all conventional. The characteristic of what is given is not definite, In emptiness, it is self-liberated, In the ultimate truth of wisdom, free from elaboration, Appearance and emptiness are shown as two. The meaning of non-dual union, the Middle Way, Is the wisdom free from extremes. The self-power of reality is unceasing, In the nature of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, The five great elements also, Have no other external agent. Appearance is in memory and thought itself, In mere appearance, there is no entity, When memory and thought are absent, No characteristic is apprehended in any way. The five elements during sleep, Are empty of characteristics when awake, Not even a particle is established, Though non-existent, there is mere dream appearance. The five elements when awake, Are empty of nature in dreams, Not truly established, merely a dream, Appearance and emptiness are impermanent. Not separate, indivisible, one, Sleeping and waking are not two, It is conceptualization of one reality. If devoid of conceptualization, it is emptiness, Emptiness itself is appearance. Since appearance arises in the mind, In the field of the eye, there are various forms, Though appearing, their essence is empty. The essence, the consciousness of the eye, Is empty of knowing form. Appearance and emptiness, union from the beginning, Abide like reflections in a mirror. There is no form, nor is there a seer, Seeing form is its very essence, Inseparable, one, free from elaboration. Likewise, the sounds of the ear, Are empty of hearing, like a sweet sound. The smell of the nose is like smoke, The appearance of sensation is empty of essence. The taste of the tongue is illusion, Like food, it is empty by mere experience. What is touched by the body is like space, By mere touch, it is empty of appearance. All phenomena of the mind, Various kinds of happiness, suffering, good, and bad, Are empty of memory, like a dream. When essence and memory are simultaneous, There is no need to meditate on emptiness. Essence itself is emptiness, Form is empty of the essence of form. Sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena, Are empty of their own essence. Likewise, the gate and object that grasp at them, The six consciousnesses, Are empty of essence, non-dual with it.
