Neither with characteristics can be meditated upon, nor without characteristics can be meditated upon. Each of these also has two aspects: not meditating on the ground, and not meditating through realization. The example of not meditating and yet being continuous is shown like a river. Not meditating and yet not being separate from meaning is like a bee's flower petal collecting honey. Not meditating and yet naturally clear is like the essence of the sun's radiance. O Secret Lord, listen carefully! In all the tantras and agamas I have taught, all the words of 'no meditation,' all the words of 'no need to abide,' all the words of 'cannot be accomplished,' all the words of 'no coming together and separating,' and self-clear, self-nature, great sovereign, and from the beginning, no coming together and separating, transcending all actions and efforts, on the path there is no going, realization manifest Buddha, self-born great wisdom, spontaneously accomplished primordial Buddha, in the mind there is nothing to do, separated from the object of focus, and 'no meditation, placing the mind,' all the words of 'cannot be meditated upon,' know that they are combined with a calling voice, as shown here. Thus it was said. From the Tantra of Great Meaning Clarity Free from Elaborations, the chapter on explaining the meaning of no meditation, including the words spoken, is the third chapter. Then again, the Lord of Secrets asked: O O Bhagavan, skilled in means, please speak about the meaning of conduct. Thus he asked. The Teacher replied: Secret Lord, listen well! The nature of conduct, its definition, its divisions, common examples, words of expression, and the meaning expressed in summary, the nature of conduct is: conduct is unceasingly connected with meaning. The definition of conduct is: it engages and enjoys in accordance with each meaning. There are two types of division: conduct with acceptance and rejection, and conduct without acceptance and rejection. The example is like a variety of illusionists, and in any case, know the example of connecting it with meaning. Like a skilled craftsman using his hands. O Secret Lord, from all the tantras and agamas I have taught, all the words of conduct and activity, and actions and deeds, and the three yogas of superior, middling, and inferior, and all the conduct of ground, path, and fruit, whatever arises, practice it as I have taught. Thus it was said.

Thus it was spoken. In the Tantra of Great Clarity Beyond Elaboration, summarizing conduct, is the fourth chapter, the chapter on teachings. Then, again, the Lord of Secrets asked: "O, O, Bhagavan Vajradhara, Speak, I beseech you, of the meaning of the fruit." Thus he asked. The Teacher replied: "O Vajra-holder, listen well, The essence of the fruit, with its defining terms, And its divisions, examples, and expressions, I will now explain in brief. The essence of the fruit is: The complete perfection of individual views. The defining term is: Liberation, maturation, completion, finality, non-regression. The divisions are: With outflows and without outflows. Examples of gradual or sudden completion are: The ripening of tree branches and leaf tips, Or like the fruit of the Udumbara. O secret lord, listen well, In all the tantras and agamas I have taught, Wherever individual fruits may arise, Know them as I have taught. The collections of terms that represent the fruit are: Finality and completion, Maturation and accomplishment, Liberation and non-regression, and so on. From the first, called Arhat, To the last, attaining one's own ground, Know them as I have taught." Thus it was spoken. In the Tantra of Great Clarity Beyond Elaboration, the fifth chapter, explaining the meaning of the fruit. "O, O, Bhagavan Vajradhara, Speak, I beseech you, the defining terms Of the names of the nine vehicles, Complete with view, meditation, and conduct." Thus he asked. The Teacher replied: "The individual defining terms are: I will explain, and you should keep them in mind. The Teacher's words and meanings, Listen with the ear faculty and understand with the mind faculty, That which does not arise from one's own awareness, But relies on the Teacher's words, And proclaims that meaning to others, Is the defining term of the Hearer. Without relying on other teachers, Accomplished by the power of habit, is the Solitary Buddha. It is the defining term of the Solitary Conqueror. Renunciation, wisdom, compassion, And deeds perfectly endowed, Is the defining term of the Bodhisattva. Bathing and cleanliness, and emphasizing the planets and stars, Is the defining term of Kriya. Conduct ascending and view soaring, Is the defining term of Upa Yoga. To the true meaning of the Buddhas of the four lineages, Uniting one's own body, speech, and mind to benefit others, Is the defining term of Yoga.
