In the nature of mind, feelings rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as mind, the acting parts rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as form, the elements gather and rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as consciousness, causes and conditions rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as feeling, experiences rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as perception, the grasper and grasped parts rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as formation, the number of afflictions rest in their own place. In the nature of mind that appears as conceptual grasping, the objects of memory rest in their own place. Thus spoke the Teacher himself. Bodhisattvas, great beings like the bodhisattva Samantabhadra Light and others in that assembly, having gained mastery over the mind as it is, became possessors of the view of the Great Vajradhara. Then again, the bodhisattva mahasattva Samantabhadra Light asked the Teacher Samantabhadra, saying: O Teacher Samantabhadra, what is the meaning of those that appear as mind? If I do not understand these, please speak, O great lord of speech. Having asked thus, the Teacher Samantabhadra replied: O bodhisattva mahasattva, listen! Although the distinctions of mind are inconceivable, the meaning of these is to be understood as follows: Awareness and the nature of mind arising from awareness, and the minds that hold their own characteristics. Again he asked: O Teacher Samantabhadra, what is awareness and the nature of mind arising from awareness? What is the mind that holds its own characteristics? Please explain all of this to me. Having asked thus, the Teacher said: O great being, awareness and the nature of mind arising from awareness is that which is beyond all defilements and discriminations, in short, all the causes and results of nirvana, the field of activity of those who see the self-appearance of awareness. The mind that holds its own characteristics is as follows: all things that appear as permanent, and those that appear as existent, and likewise, all that appear as non-existent, and all that appear as appearance, sound, seeing, meditation, and action, and grasping, conception, and afflictions, in short, all that appears as an object of thought. In short, the wheel
