On objects, the mind that clings to wrong ideas, no matter how it examines, it is not real, so it rests in its unexamined nature. If one examines the unexamined mind, it becomes unreal and wrong, like the view of others. Thus it is said. From the Tantra of Secret Wisdom, the fourth chapter, which reveals what is secret. Then, the Bodhisattva Vajra said to the Thus-Gone One Vairochana, "O Lord of Compassion, what you have said, which the assembled gathering understands, is that the nature of mind is primordially existent. With six attachments, three inversions, and eight endeavors, you have declared that its nature is secret. Because the three have no identifiable characteristics, it is secret. Because it is secret to all, by what means can it be known? O Lord of Speech, how do you understand what is secret to all?" After he had spoken, the Thus-Gone One Vairochana replied, "The nature of the Great Vehicle mind, although it transcends all sounds and words, is taught as a means to realize its cause by the three kinds of valid cognition for those who wish to realize it with a suitable vessel. The experience of freedom from action, completion, scripture, and intelligence, and the three subtle instructions, are the supreme intelligence for realizing wisdom. The Great Method Tantra and the completion of freedom from action, and the scripture of the all-pervading Bodhicitta, establish appearance and existence as mind. It shows the essence of secret wisdom, and shows the mandala of secret self. The teachings shown by the three scriptures are in accordance with my teachings because they are so. When one experiences it with intelligence, it is the valid cognition of confident intelligence. The essence of the three scriptures is that mind itself is the dharma of intelligence. Since all are gathered into mind, no dharma other than mind appears. Whatever dharmas appear, they are mind because they appear in mind. If mind itself is not intelligence, how could it appear? The discrimination that sees differences is merely an illusion caused by inverted habitual tendencies. Although it does not exist, it appears inverted, like seeing a conch shell as yellow. The conch shell itself is not yellow, so how can it be seen as yellow? Therefore, if one thinks that yellow also exists, and that yellow exists on the conch shell, why does one not see it with unerring wisdom? By the power of clinging to conceptual thoughts, one sees various things through discrimination. First is the self-awareness of characteristics, second is self-awareness because of non-existence, both are non-existent.

That is to say, the nature of having no basis is like heat without fire, which is impossible. The self-awareness that clings to the three, clings to the meaning of self-awareness and bliss. Due to clinging, the unconditioned meaning is not seen. The ground, the unconditioned self-awareness, is nothing at all because there is nothing to grasp. The play of wisdom, self-appearance, should be known from the guru's mouth. The play of wisdom, self-appearance, and the various clinging of thoughts, if not distinguished, is a mind of ignorance.
