Confusion arises from doubt in one's own mind, excessive hope in the nature of reality, excessive doubt in samsara, and misplaced hope in other Buddhas. Seeing as nine while not knowing oneself, like a bee searching for a hive, is confusion. Being bound by effort and action, like an elephant sinking in mud, is confusion. Being misled by the power of effort and hope, like a patient taking the wrong medicine, is confusion. Grasping what is not that as that, like seeing a mirage as water, is confusion. The arising of the thought that what is not exists, like mistaking a distant friend as dead, is confusion. Effort resulting in error, like a child playing with a razor, is confusion. Self-arisen wisdom is without characteristics; to view it with partiality towards good or bad is confusion. Grasping what is not self as self, if there is mind-holding, view, or meditation, it is confusion. Seeing a celestial palace in the light, like flour, wicks, and butter lamps. Being deceived by the power of hoping for accomplishments, like a monkey falling into a well. In self-arisen wisdom, which is without self, grasping at self with the power of individuality. Showing whatever is agreeable to appearance, mistaking all of that for my compassion. Understand through the meaning of vastness. Vast and great, inconceivable, yet it must be divided into nine categories. Thus it is said. From the Tantra of the All-Encompassing Great Perfection, the Supreme Essence of All Vehicles, this is the sixteenth chapter, entitled "Explanation of Terms." Samaya. Seal, seal, seal. Then, the Bodhisattva Vajra again asked the Teacher: Ah ho! All-Perfect Great Samantabhadra, All-Pervading Great Auspiciousness. Although you have spoken of the distinctions in brief, what are the philosophical tenets and the means of completion of the first, the mistaken views of gods and humans? How does one adorn without abandoning? The Teacher spoke with radiant wisdom to the assembly. The Teacher heard the request. Listen, all you assembled disciples! My nine vehicles are also the ways of explaining samsara and nirvana. The philosophical tenets of samsara itself are whether or not they are transformed by the mind. There are two types of those not transformed: the ordinary and the discarding. Those who do not know the true nature of cause and effect are established as ordinary. Those who know and discard what is external, who practice the benefits of crafts and medicine in this life, are said to be the discarders. Those transformed by the mind are either on the right path or the wrong path. The wrong path consists of the extremists and the nihilists. These are their essence, definition, and distinctions. The essence is clinging to what is inverted with the wisdom of a different birth. The definition is evil views.

They rely on evil conduct. The divisions are three hundred and sixty, The sixty mountains of perishable aggregates, Twenty-five of the Samkhyas and others, Twenty external self-graspers, Nineteen specific self-graspers, Six Tirthikas and four distorted views. Condensed, they gather into two: permanence and annihilation. The method of enumeration is the simultaneous destruction. The nihilistic tenet is like this: Cause ceases, effect ceases, like the sky. They consider everything to be mere nothingness. The permanent is the nature of mind in the form of a bindu, White, clear, oily, and cohesive within the heart, They view it as existing, unchanging from the beginning. The result is born into the retinue of the powerful one. Thus, each has their own desired doctrine. Emaho! Mind-hero Vajra, listen! All tenets are the minds of individuals, They do not correspond to the nature of things. Although obscured and misled, suffering torments, Without wisdom, destruction is certain. Unknowing and uncomprehending is a wrong path. External, internal, permanent, annihilation, existence, non-existence, Are not contradictory, they fall into the nature of space. Effort and practice accomplish the nature of the past. Because there is no clinging or conceptualization there, The nature of mind has no acceptance or rejection, no clinging. The nihilistic heretics are the ornament of the Great Perfection, Comfortable in the unabandoned, spontaneously liberated state. Unborn, unceasing, various appearances arise, Three hundred and sixty are the ornament of the Great Perfection. The vast expanse is unabandoned, self-liberated, And the dualistic appearances of self and other, samsara, The six realms, heretics, permanence, and annihilation, Float in the expanse of my single cause. The self-nature of all is the ornament of the Great Perfection, Unabandoned, primordially liberated, completely open, Clear in the expanse, there is no basis for imputation. Not abiding on a basis, self-knowing is bliss. The view of the great demon of the heretics, Is the mistaken judgment of individuals themselves. The reality of the nature of things, I do not abide in permanence or annihilation. The four extremes, the four limits, are self-liberated, Unabandoned, primordially liberated, realized in the expanse. Awareness is impartial, all-pervasive, Clinging to permanence and annihilation is a demonic clinging. Aho! I have unraveled the Great Ati, Permanence and annihilation arise on their own and are liberated in their own place. The heretics are unabandoned and unbound, As the beautiful ornament of the Great Perfection. If one is not understood, many are difficult. Awareness is moving, free from cause and condition. The unborn, uncreated realm of phenomena, From the realm of space, the unconditioned expanse. The three realms, the three bodies, are self-liberated. Neither ceasing nor permanent, there is no doing. Neither fading nor pacifying, there is no elaboration. Awareness is unobscured, clear, unfading, In the sky, whatever spontaneously arises, existence and phenomena, The result is spontaneously accomplished body.
