The egg matures, breaks open, and performs its function. The essence of the sun radiates light. The example of wisdom adorned with compassion. Like droplets of water scattering and gathering in the ocean. The combination of illusion manifests various images. The uninterrupted play of qualities is clear in every way. These are the condensed examples of many. This is from the Great Treatise on the All-Illuminating Bindu, which illustrates the examples of adornment and play, the thirteenth chapter. In a vast and great city called Padma Desal, lived a king named Norbu Oden. He possessed a great wish-fulfilling jewel filled with many small jewels. Once, he went out for a stroll and to inspect the country, where he encountered a blind old woman. The old woman was being led by someone. Five thieves took the opportunity to steal the wish-fulfilling jewel. They sold it to six dark men in the six cities of Smesha. The six dark men made offerings and showed respect to the jewel, but the jewel did not fulfill their desires. They became discouraged and filled with doubt. Later, a jester appeared before the king. The jester said, "The jewel was stolen by five thieves and sold to six dark men in the six cities of Smesha." The king was enraged and killed the old woman, destroyed the six cities, punished the six dark men, and forced the five thieves into servitude. This is the secret to recovering the jewel and regaining the kingdom. Vajra Aham Ratna Jñana Pañca Prasara Aham Hum Ti. (Tibetan: བཛྲ་ཨ་ཧཾ་རཏྣ་ཛྙཱ་ན་པཉྩ་པྲ་སཱ་ར་ཨ་ཧཱུཾ་ཊི།, Sanskrit Devanagari: वज्र अहं रत्न ज्ञान पञ्च प्रसार अहं हुं ठि, Sanskrit Romanization: vajra ahaṃ ratna jñāna pañca prasāra ahaṃ huṃ ṭhi, Literal Chinese Meaning: Diamond I Jewel Wisdom Five Spread I Hum Ti) Then, the Bhagavan again entered the samadhi of manifesting various distinctions. Then, the Lord of Secrets asked: "O, O, Bhagavan Vajradhara! That which is spoken of as power and play, If not understood, appears as the illusion of grasping and being grasped. Samsara arises spontaneously as play. Please explain the manner in which this illusion arises." The Teacher replied: "Son of lineage, listen well! The unchanging ground, the primordially enlightened Bhagavan Great Vajradhara, Has never been confused in the past, is not confused now, And will never be confused in the future. For example, there is no basis for darkness in the essence of the sun. Although a mirror reflects whatever conditions it encounters, It appears through the power of purity, But it is not stained or covered by it."

Like impartial wisdom, the protector is completely enlightened from the very beginning, and the confusion of habits is eliminated from the start. Like medicine, there is no distinction, but it appears as medicine and poison. The great manifestation of the non-dual ground, although it does not move from the nature of non-duality, appears through the power of qualities. Appearing as many is a quality, but because of confusion, the quality appears as a fault. Understanding as above, the fault itself is liberated as a quality. However, I will explain in detail the way of confusion, the root, cause, and time of confusion, the conditions of confusion, and the actual confusion. I will tell those of medium capacity, listen! First, explain the root of confusion, which also has three aspects: the root of confusion of the nature of reality and objects, the root of confusion of awareness and mind, and the root of confusion of the five lights and body. First, the nature of reality is impartial emptiness, in the middle, wisdom manifests in various ways, and finally, clinging and conceptual habits increase. That appears as if there is no essence. That refers to the root of confusion of objects. Now explain the root of confusion of the mind. First, awareness changes without interruption, in the middle, clinging arises from radiance, and finally, because the cause of the mind arises, various minds and concepts arise from it. The root of confusion of the mind is pointed out there. Then explain the root of confusion of the body. First, awareness is clear in the expanse, in the middle, the nature of reality manifests in the expanse, and finally, because habits are imprinted on it, the coarse aggregates of form appear. The root of confusion of the body is pointed out by this. Hey! Hey! Secret Lord, be sure to remember! I will explain the rationality of the three roots. The root of confusion of the nature of reality and objects is reasonable. Why does that which has no essence appear as matter? The root of confusion of awareness and mind is reasonable. Why is it that only awareness is consistent with one side? The root of confusion of the five lights and body is reasonable. Why do colors match shapes? From the aspects of subtle and coarse, the difference between the root and the actual is shown. I will tell you those words that represent it, listen! It is called confusion, it is called reason, it is called light, it is called the first kalpa, it is called the beginning, it is called the past time and before the future, before I did not exist, the actions of sentient beings were originally non-existent, before sentient beings did not exist, the great elements were originally superior, before the great elements did not exist, the vast space was originally superior.
