Asked: Alas, alas, Bhagavan Vajradhara! Please explain the meaning of that (liberation and compassion). Thus asked. The Teacher said: Lord of Secrets, listen carefully! I will explain the individual essence, defining characteristic, distinctions, names, and corresponding examples. Not abiding in the phenomena of samsara, but abiding in the meaning of nirvana. I will explain the essence of liberation. Each essence is distinct. The essence of liberation from objects is the clear manifestation of one's own great radiance. The essence of liberation from the body is the mind, insubstantial and a precious vessel. The essence of liberation from the mind is non-conceptual awareness, self-illuminating. The defining characteristic of the term "liberation" is that it thoroughly transcends the phenomena of effort and is not bound by the three confusions; therefore, it is a reasoned definition. The distinctions are explained in the section on essence. The examples are: Like unraveling a snake's knot, or like the knots in tails. The defining characteristic of the essence of compassion is that the essence is unceasing, the two form bodies. Why is it called compassion? It is named because it unceasingly eliminates harm. The distinctions are two: great and small, namely, non-conceptual and conceptual. Grasping is like an iron hook, delivering is like a boat. Eliminating ignorance is like the sun, curing suffering and disease is like medicine and a doctor. Thus it was said. From the Great Illumination of the All-Illuminating Bindu, the explanation of the meaning of liberation and compassion, this is the eighty-ninth chapter. Then again, the Lord of Secrets asked: Alas, alas, Bhagavan Vajradhara! What is the example of abiding in the vessel of habitual tendencies? What is the example of the transference of the vessel? Here, what is the example of the arising of knowledge in the bardo through realization? What is the example of accompanying wisdom without separation during the transference of the vessel of habitual tendencies? What is the example of the reversal of confusion? What is the example of wisdom arising later even when a realized being is disturbed by illness and circumstances at the time of death? What is the example of the five wisdoms manifestly arising without the Dharmakaya arising from the body? What was said about condensing the Dharmakaya of a moment into the three bodies? What is the example of liberation in a moment? What is the example of awareness quickly entering into the radiance of wisdom? What is the example of the arising of the appearance of wisdom from the nature of reality? Therefore, what is the example of non-reversal? What is the example of perfect complete enlightenment?

Venerable, what is the analogy for the mind not being truly present in the bardo for those who have not realized, but the mind appearing later? What is the analogy for liberating oneself for the benefit of the incarnate body? What is the analogy for nirvana? What is the analogy for different essences in the same realm? What is the analogy for one reason perfecting various abilities separately? What is the analogy for liberating from one's own ground and abiding in one's own ground without separation? What is the analogy for the four extremes? What is the analogy for wisdom being self-illuminating as a sign? What is the analogy for not being liberated by meditating without conceptualization? What is the analogy for awareness being self-illuminating in a jewel's womb but not seen by others? What is the analogy for initially being deluded from a jewel's womb? What is the analogy for not being deluded from a jewel's womb later? What is the nature of the analogy? What is the definition? What is the classification? What is the necessity? Thus it was asked. The Teacher said: Son of the lineage, listen carefully. The analogy for being in the womb of habitual tendencies is like a lion cub and a garuda chick. The analogy for transferring the womb is like a bird emerging from an egg, and a snake shedding its skin. Here, the analogy for severing the bardo with realization is like recognizing someone previously familiar. The analogy for accompanying wisdom without separation while transferring the womb is like taking a lamp out of a room, the room becomes dark, and a person's hand goes to the place they want to go without separating from the lamp. The analogy for reversing delusion is like waking up from sleep. The analogy for a realized person obtaining the dharani of non-forgetfulness and wisdom appearing later, even when disturbed by illness and adverse conditions at the time of death, is like the moon in water being disturbed and unclear when struck by a stone, but becoming clear when the water clears. The analogy for the Dharmakaya not arising from the body but wisdom appearing prior to the body is like the sun being on the eastern ridge but its light shining on the western mountain. The three instantaneous Dharmakayas are the hook that grasps, which can be grasped without grasping the five lights, and the pure essence that gathers the nature of reality dissolving into the state of wisdom, and the dharani of non-forgetfulness, and the constant rope, these three. The analogy for liberation in a single instant is like a lion leaping, and when a vase is formed...
