Listen! Now, in the bardo of birth and death, with the definitive instructions of the oral tradition, understand the meaning of the absence of objects and mind in the ground. From the three wisdoms, the wisdom of insight arises. Since there is no cause or condition from the beginning, that self-born king of awareness, with the definitive instructions of the oral tradition, from the beginning, in self-born awareness, knowing and understanding the meaning of the oral tradition, therefore, it is complete. Now listen to the essence of the gathering. When the ground and definitive instructions are complete, know the mind without error or obscuration. Therefore, the arising of thoughts is said to be like clarified butter. The Great Perfection, all definitive meanings gathered, from the Tantra equal to the wisdom space, Chapter Fifty-five, which reveals the perfection of self-born wisdom. Chapter Twenty, which is summarized and taught. Then Vajrasattva, understanding the meaning of the special teachings, with compassion for the retinue, made this request to the Perfectly Enlightened One: "What represents the definitive meaning of the ground? How did the first Buddha arise? How did its blessings arise? How is the path represented by words? Please explain, Perfectly Enlightened One." Having made this request and heard the meaning, to the assembled retinue, the unerring, definitive words of the Buddha, "I will explain, listen well." The example that represents the ground of nature is like unconditioned space. It does not come from anywhere, it has always been there. It does not go anywhere, the three times are one. Now it is all-pervasive, without grasping. In the sky without beginning or end, because there is no awareness, it is emptiness. As an example, it is profound, but in meaning, it is non-existent. Now listen again, Vajrasattva. Likewise, the abiding of the essence is, samsara and nirvana untouched, gathered as before. The Buddha is non-dual, becoming the ground of both samsara and nirvana. Although it exists without distraction, the meaning is not grasped, it is the self-appearing mind. The nature is not grasped and no distinction is made. It abides continuously without coming or going. Because it has no beginning or end, it is not recognized. Now, the basis of all, the mind abides in the mind. Because it is unconditioned, there is no birth or death. It is the ground of reliance for all sentient beings. Because there is no faith or respect, it is difficult to realize. The Great Perfection, all definitive meanings gathered, from the Tantra equal to the wisdom space, Chapter Fifty-six, which reveals the example and meaning of the ground.
