Like a blind man not seeing a precious jewel. From the Tantra of the Great Perfection, the Quintessence of All Definitive Meanings, the Coemergent Wisdom as Vast as Space, the Sixteenth Chapter: Showing How the Mind Goes Astray. Then, to the assembled retinue, the All-Knowing Teacher spoke: "Mind is the root of samsara; objects are the basis for various appearances. The mind clings to various concepts; therefore, mind is the cause of samsara. Because the mind clings to permanence and annihilation, wrong views arise from the mind. Whatever is thought is a delusion of one's own mind; from the delusions and concepts arising from the mind, all attachment and aversion are generated. Therefore, samsara is created by the mind. Then, the suffering of samsara is due to the mind going astray. Now, listen to the essence of the gathering. Through the concepts created by the mind, the continuity of births is endless. Because it is created by the mind, it is not self-arisen. Therefore, this mind is a sudden delusion. It increases attachment to the eight worldly concerns. Now, listen, Vajrasattva. All the fools who do not see the definitive meaning say that there is no Dharma other than the mind. Therefore, their ignorant minds are mistaken. Fools meditate, and are ruined by meditating on darkness. Whatever is thought is a perversion of the Dharma of the mind. All the evil deeds done by the mind, accepting and rejecting, this mind is extremely unrestrained. They are ruined by showing the provisional meaning as the mind; by making distinctions, this mind is disturbed. With clever words hoping to understand, they corrupt this unerring definitive meaning. Now, listen to the essence of the gathering. All the ignorant and deluded beings say that the Dharmakaya, the self-existent, is the mind. Therefore, they do not understand the meaning from the words. All those who understand the definitive meaning from names, therefore, cannot attain enlightenment through the mind. The analogy for seeking that is, finding an elephant by following its tracks. If you seek the meaning from the side of the mind, you will find the self-aware king, wisdom. Having found that, you are free from clinging to it as the mind; free from clinging, without mind, is the self-aware body. That meaning is the inseparable realm of enlightenment; the samadhi free from mind abides continuously. Now, listen to the essence of the gathering. Wanting to become a Buddha from the mind is like a prostitute marrying her son. Saying that appearance is the mind is like mistaking copper for gold. Therefore, if you find the meaning endowed with scripture, you will realize the meaning of the self-arisen essence. Ignorance is dispelled and the mind is lost. Therefore, the Dharmakaya is immutable. The Great Perfection, the Quintessence of All Definitive Meanings, the Coemergent Wisdom as Vast as Space and

From the Tantra of Nyam Pa, the seventeenth chapter, which teaches that one's own mind has no true meaning. Thereafter, the All-Knowing King, out of love for the assembled retinue, used metaphors to symbolize the various categories of mind, and specifically distinguished and taught: A mind like a lion, a mind like a leopard, a mind like a bear, a mind like a she-bear, a mind like a wolf, a mind like a jackal, a mind like a fox, a mind like a wild dog, a mind like a vulture, a mind like a poisonous snake, and so on, like possessing poison. A mind like a garuda, a mind like an eagle, a mind like a vulture, a mind like a swan, a mind like a peacock, a mind like a hawk, a mind like a crow, a mind like a crane, a mind like a parrot, a mind like a bat, a mind like a firefly, a mind like an owl, a mind like a domestic bird, and so on, like possessing desire. Now listen again to the essence of the gathering, a mind like an elephant, a mind like a buffalo, a mind like a cow, a mind like a wild boar, a mind like a horse, a mind like a mule, a mind like a donkey, a mind like a pack animal, and being controlled by others, and so on, like a mind that is exploited. Now listen again to the essence of the gathering, a mind like a rakshasa, a mind like a great fish, a mind like an argali, a mind like a crocodile, a mind like a cat, a mind like an ant, a mind like a worm, a mind like a bee, a mosquito, and so on, a mind that is harmful. Now listen again to the essence of the gathering, a mind like a poet, a mind like a monkey, a mind like a cat, a mind like a beggar, a mind like a prostitute, a mind like a merchant, a mind like a madman, a mind like a thorn, a mind like a round stone, a mind like a tree, a mind like a sheep, a mind like a mouse, a mind like a guest dog, a mind like a fox, and so on, possessing a mind that clings to inferiority. These are just a few categories, countless and beyond words. For the aggregation of faults of the evil mind, use metaphors.
