Appearing in itself. The habit of movement, manifest in action. Because that light generates everything, it is held as consciousness. The habit of being held, appears as consciousness. Attachment to that causes desire to arise. Extreme clarity causes hatred to arise. Not knowing arising causes ignorance to arise. The establishment of that itself causes pride to arise. Appearing as two causes jealousy to arise. Those gathered into one cause the form aggregate to be established. Self-luminous awareness appears as the five sense faculties. Awareness, self-radiant, is held as the appearance of the five objects. The habit of being held causes the delusion of the entire body to be established. Awareness engaging with objects arises as male. The habit of being held, being born as male, is established. Awareness not engaging with objects is held as female. The habit of being held, awareness appears as female. Awareness remaining in its own state is held as hermaphrodite. The habit of being held, appears as hermaphrodite. The appearance of light arising from oneself, And the two appearances of objects named as names, By seeing them as similar, of the same mind, and alike, From that basis of similarity, the cause of delusion is made. Not understanding arising, arising, and abiding after arising, Therefore, the appearances of delusion arise separately. From a single basis, various appearances arise. From the Great Extensive Jewel Tantra, The twenty-first chapter, which explains delusion in essence. The secret empowerment of Vajrasattva, the gatherer, To the teacher of teachers, Samantabhadra, How does delusion arise from the general generality? How does delusion arise from the tantra? How does delusion arise without a cause? How does delusion arise with a basis of similarity? How does delusion arise without a basis of similarity? That Samantabhadra, the emptiness of teachers, To the secret empowerment of Vajrasattva, the gatherer, Delusion from the general generality is: Awareness, non-conceptual, abiding in its own state, The power of awareness manifests in two ways. By realizing that awareness itself as emptiness, Awareness, self-luminous, without duality of object and subject. From that, it is known that everything arises. Having realized, it also becomes the basis for the arising of Buddhahood. Because that awareness itself is not realized as the nature of emptiness, Therefore, self-luminous awareness is seen as light. Light and awareness arise, appearing as two. From the objects of that light, various awarenesses are distinguished. Not understanding the three realms is the basis for the arising of sentient beings. Awareness is generally twofold.

By seeing, confusion appears from the generality of the general. The confused appearance of the fruit arising from the cause is: The nature of the branch of awareness does not use the object. Awareness abides in its own clarity within. It is considered ignorance and held as ignorance. Because emptiness is not understood, and the object is not understood, it appears as what is called ignorance. Because of the ignorance that arises from the cause itself, the appearance that arises from itself is held as other. What is held appears as another object by itself. Because the object obscures awareness, other conditions are not understood. It is seen as ignorance arising from the cause. The confusion arising from the causeless is: The self-born Dharmakaya is pure from the beginning. The branch of awareness arising from it is also: The unmade essence is pure from the beginning. There is no conceptual confusion in it. The nature of awareness abides in emptiness, it is deeply clear. The branch of awareness is naturally pure, it is self-illuminating. Awareness appearing clearly is luminosity. The name of confusion is merely imputed. Because it is held as being what it is not, it is confused. In reality, there is no such thing as confusion. Causelessness is merely a sudden imputation. The confusion with a similar basis is: The similar basis of the four-fold mode of arising is: Awareness is made clear by itself. The similar basis of confusion in the vessel is: Awareness is made clear outwardly. The confusion without a similar basis is: The places of the four-fold mode of arising, and the confusion in the intermediate state of existence. All these appearances as vessels, are confused because they do not understand that they arise from the power of emptiness. All these appearances as sentient beings, are confused because they do not understand that they arise from the rays of awareness. Because they do not understand that they are inseparable as one, they are confused in various vehicles. There is no other than one, it is confused that they appear separately. From the Great Extensive Jewel Tantra, the twenty-second chapter, the different bases of confusion, is complete. The Gatherer, Secret Lord Vajrasattva, To the Teacher of Teachers, Samantabhadra, Asked about the confusion of ultimate truth, The confusion of conventional truth, The confusion of illusion, And what is the confusion of wrong. The Teacher of Teachers, Samantabhadra, To the Gatherer, Secret Lord Vajrasattva, Replied: In ultimate truth, there is no confusion, But because of attachment, it is called confusion. The nature of reality abides in emptiness, If emptiness is held as emptiness, it is called confusion. Emptiness itself is also empty.
