Appears in itself. The habit of movement is clear in formation. Because light generates everything, it is held as consciousness. The habit of holding appears as consciousness. Because of attachment to it, desire arises. Because it is extremely clear, anger arises. Not knowing arising, it becomes ignorance. That itself is established, so it becomes pride. Appearing as two, it becomes jealousy. These gather as one, so the skandha of form is established. Self-luminous awareness appears as the five sense doors. Self-radiant awareness is held as the appearance of the five objects. The habit of holding, the illusion of the entire body is established. Awareness engaging with objects, so it arises as male. The habit of holding, being born as male is established. Awareness not engaging with objects, so it is held as female. The habit of holding, awareness appears as female. Awareness abiding in its own state, so it is held as hermaphrodite. The habit of holding, appears as hermaphrodite. The appearance of light arising from oneself, And the two appearances of objects named as names, By seeing as similar, awareness alike, alike, From that basis of similarity, the cause of illusion is made. Not understanding arising, arising, and abiding after arising, Therefore, the appearances of illusion arise separately. From one basis, various appearances arise. From the Great Expanded Jewel Garland Tantra, The twenty-first chapter, which explains illusion in essence. The secret lord Vajrasattva, the gatherer, To the teacher of teachers, Samantabhadra, How does illusion arise from the general generality? How does illusion arise from the tantra? How does causeless illusion arise? How does illusion with a basis of similarity arise? How does illusion without a basis of similarity arise? That Samantabhadra, the emptiness of teachers, To the secret lord Vajrasattva, the gatherer, Illusion from the general generality is: Awareness not thinking, abiding in its own state, The power of awareness dawns as two aspects. By realizing that awareness itself is emptiness, Awareness, self-luminous, without duality of object and subject, From that, it is known that all things arise. Having realized, it also becomes the basis for the arising of Buddhas. Because that awareness itself does not realize essence as emptiness, Therefore, self-luminous awareness is seen as light. Light and awareness appear as two. From the objects of that light, various awarenesses are discerned. Not understanding the three realms, it is the basis for the arising of sentient beings. Awareness is divided into two in general.

Through seeing, the appearance of delusion arises from the general of the general. The deluded appearance of the fruit arising from the cause is: The essence of the limb consciousness does not use the object. Consciousness abides in its own clarity, and is considered ignorance and held as ignorance. Because emptiness is not understood, and the object is not understood, it appears as so-called ignorance. Because of the ignorance arising from the cause itself, the appearance arising from itself is held as other. What is held appears as another object by itself. Because the object obscures consciousness, other conditions are not understood. Ignorance arising from the cause is seen. The delusion arising from the causeless is: The self-born Dharmakaya is pure from the beginning. The limb consciousness arising from it is also, the uncreated essence is pure from the beginning. Therefore, there is no conceptual delusion. The essence of consciousness abides in emptiness, deep and clear. The limb of consciousness is naturally pure, self-illuminating. Consciousness is clear and bright, it is luminosity. The so-called delusion is merely a designation. Delusion arises from holding what is not true as true. In reality, there is no so-called delusion. It is merely a sudden designation without cause. The delusion with a similar basis is: The similar basis of the four phrases of the twelve sources is that the manifestation of consciousness is done by itself. The similar basis of delusion as a container is that consciousness manifests outwardly. The delusion without a similar basis is: The places of the four phrases of the twelve sources, and the delusion of the intermediate state. All these things that appear as containers, are deluded because they do not understand that they arise from the power of emptiness. All these things that appear as essence, are deluded because they do not understand that they arise from the rays of consciousness. Because they do not understand non-duality as one, they are deluded about various vehicles. Originally non-dual, but appearing as different, is delusion. From the Great Extensive Jewel Sutra, the twenty-second chapter on the different bases of delusion is complete. The secret lord of gathering, Vajrasattva, asked the teacher of teachers, Samantabhadra, about the delusion of ultimate truth, the delusion of relative truth, the delusion of illusion, and the delusion of wrong. The teacher of teachers, Samantabhadra, replied to the secret lord of gathering, Vajrasattva: There is no delusion in ultimate truth, but it is called delusion because of attachment and clinging. The nature of Dharma abides in emptiness. If emptiness is held as empty, it is called delusion. Emptiness itself is also empty.
