The four great continents are unreal but appear, The plants and forests are unreal but appear, The various enjoyments are unreal but appear, From the gradual confusion of the limbs and skills, The appearance of form is confused by light. Thus it is said. The precious, clear, razor-sharp light cuts off illusions from the root, from the tantra equal to the sky. The third chapter, which shows the ways of confusion through the gradual confusion of transmission. Then Vajrasattva, To Kuntu Zangpo, asked thus, From the confusion arising from the light's form, The object appears as a condition, How does the confusion of non-existence and appearance become confused? Thus he asked. The teacher said to the assembly, As the rays of the limbs of self-arisen power move, If summarized in the sutra, these five limbs arise. From these five, the outer and inner world and beings are confused. Unceasing awareness is confused into the five elements. Sang Sang is the name, Seng Seng is the clarity, Separating appearance and emptiness, thinking to abide, one grasps at space. The attachment of grasping ripens into the fruit of confusion. Solid, hard, firm, strong, and stable, thinking it is support, one grasps at the earth. Bound and attached, thus confused into earth. Meme is wet, soaked, moist, and, Gathering, thinking it is water, one grasps at water. By grasping and attachment, it appears as the substance of water. Hot, burning, blazing, and spreading, thinking it is fire, one grasps at fire, appearing as fire, grasping at fire, thus it ripens into the confusion of fire. Light, moving, shaking, throbbing, and, Moving, thinking it is wind, one grasps at wind. By grasping and attachment, the confusion of wind ripens. Thus, the five elements, the real marks of, The confusion of similar names ripens. As the rays of awareness, the limbs of power, move, In the three wheels, the mind wavers and sees as female. Obscured by seeing as female, appearing and confused as female. One's own awareness appears as male, grasping as male and confused. In the bliss of the undifferentiated purity of dharmata, Experiencing bliss with the awareness of grasping as male and female, Thinking it is male and female engaging in desire, one is confused. Therefore, as awareness arises again, Thus desiring and clinging, one grasps at desire. The attachment of grasping ripens into the confusion of desire. Born of the limbs of awareness, the three wheels move, Seeing another male, one grasps at the bliss of awareness, Not realizing non-duality, in joy

That happiness, giving rise to hatred with the thought of definitely enjoying it, the hatred that arises ripens into the fruit of delusion. Then, one's own wrong thoughts and jealousy arise, and the jealousy that arises ripens into the fruit of delusion. Then, one is obscured by the shadow of one's own name, and arrogance arises, thinking oneself greater than others. The arrogance that arises is a deluded appearance. The habit of the name of wrong view increases, and the increased habit ripens into ignorance and delusion. Thus, the five afflictions are all delusions. The branch of conceptual thought arises, and the name "awareness" is established. The sky is clear and contains pure forms. Thinking that this is an object to be seen, it is grasped as form. Because of grasping, it is obscured by name and mistakenly thought to be form. Then, from one's own wrong thoughts that arise, just as the heat and warmth of fire ripen, one thinks that this is an object to be heard and grasps it as sound. Because of grasping, it is obscured by name and mistakenly thought to be sound. The self-manifesting power, one's own wrong thoughts arise again, and the moisture, wetness, and soaking that come from water, one thinks that this is taste, a place to be experienced, and grasps it as taste. Because of grasping, the habit of name is mistakenly thought to be taste. Then, one's own wrong thoughts arise again, and the lightness, movement, and motion that come from wind, one thinks that this is smell, an object to be smelled, and grasps it as smell. Because of grasping, the habit of name is mistakenly thought to be smell. Then, one's own conceptual thoughts arise, and the hardness, stability, and support that come from earth, one thinks that this is smoothness and roughness, and grasps it as an object of touch. Because of grasping, the habit of name is mistakenly thought to be touch. Thus, the five objects of desire are habits, their essence and branches cling to the mind, and the clinging habits are mistakenly thought to be the five objects of desire. Thus it was said. From the light of the jewel-like, clear, razor-sharp sword, completely cutting off the appearance of delusion, in the tantra equal to space, the fourth chapter: the five elements and five poisons are mistakenly thought to be the five objects of desire. Then, Vajrasattva asked the teacher Samantabhadra, who is without signs: How do the aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, arising, and the differences of form appearing as shapes, as well as directions, colors, signs, various characteristics, the three realms, six paths, similar kinds, and shared desires, how do these similar habits of names become delusions? The teacher spoke to the assembled retinue: The branch of self-arisen power, called the force of awareness, stirs, and the habits of the five objects have been appearing from the beginning.
