Having definitely examined all vehicles, Having reached the end in this Great Perfection, At the general essence of all vehicles, Having reached the end of the path and the ground, It is the essence of all mandalas, It is the spontaneously accomplished wisdom of the Buddha. From the Tantra of the Great Perfection, the Wheel of Spontaneous Bliss Gathering of Meanings, the eighth chapter, which is the chapter on showing characteristics, causes, conditions, and examples. Then to the assembled gatherings, The All-Knowing Teacher spoke: Skill and nature, the object of focus, The skill of determining the basis of all things. The seven aggregates and six objects included, Are the skill of the alaya consciousness, Without the alaya, those things, Cannot possibly arise. In the seven consciousnesses and six objects, The object of one is its own nature. Those included are common skills, However many outer and inner dharmas there are, Many others, in the alaya consciousness, That itself is nature, free from elaboration. Not understanding it in that way, through wrong conceptions, Clinging to self and object, the basis of hatred, Accumulating various forms of happiness and suffering, Therefore, wandering in the three realms of samsara. Those are all mistaken skills, That is also of the alaya consciousness, The correct skill is outer and inner dharmas, Form body, wisdom, and pure lands, Actually, it is mirror-like wisdom. In the alaya consciousness, Conceptual thoughts and habitual tendencies increase in power, That itself is an obstacle to omniscience, Having completely purified the ten grounds in sequence, Completely transformed into form body and wisdom. Therefore, the alaya is the correct skill, That also, from the bodhisattva up to, Down to the hell realms, Pervading all and arising from all, That is the common skill of the alaya. Because of its vastness, it obscures qualities, Those arise from ignorance and habitual tendencies, Therefore, it is the common skill of the alaya. That also, sentient beings of the three realms, Ignorance and habitual tendencies are two, Imputed, co-emergent, and, Latent and manifest causes, Since all are generated from that, The alaya is not a common skill. Otherwise, the alaya is the skill of its own nature, Other than that, the skill of its own nature, Is doubt and conceptual thought, If asked, why is one like that? The alaya, ignorance, and habitual tendencies are two, Since it is completely transformed into clinging, In ignorance there is doubt, The thought that it is a habitual tendency arises, Without that, that also does not arise, Therefore, doubt and thought are the skill of its own nature, That also, the vajra

Listen, Bodhisattva! The alaya-consciousness is a momentary stream, impermanent and continuous through the three times. It is not made by anyone, but abides naturally in its own nature. Therefore, it is the nature of its own being. That alaya-consciousness does not stay still for a moment, it moves. Because it moves, what has gone first will eventually cease completely. The moment is divided into three times, ceasing and being the nature of consciousness itself. Although the momentary stream changes and is impermanent, it is the nature of being without fault. The essence ceases in an instant, but it does not change from the continuation of the same kind. The stream of the alaya-moment, if it exists continuously through the three times, when the fruit is completely ripe, the name of alaya will not appear, and it will not be possible to return to samsara. If it changes all at once, it becomes a Buddha, and the ultimate practice does not change. If it does not change after becoming a perfect Buddha, the conditioned stream becomes unconditioned. It can be inferred from the arising of the fruit. If it changes badly due to the cause of change, at the end of complete change, it is more painful than hell.
