The meaning of distinguishing various names. In the desired treatises of all vehicles, From the perspective of essence, classification, and definition, The essence of the Alaya consciousness is: The self-aware, clear consciousness, Pure like a crystal ball, Constantly continuous, eternally existing. The Alaya is the state of Bodhichitta, Not created by anyone, naturally existing. Its meaning is the realm of reality that pervades everything, Transforming into the Great Mirror Wisdom. In the true ultimate meaning of Ati, The habits of ignorance and wrong views, Although they pervade everything from their inherent nature, But for the completely pure Tathagata, There are no Alaya habits. Also, Vajrasattva, listen. Also, regarding the Alaya consciousness, Because it is established as the Alaya of the body, Therefore, the auspicious marks of a man and, Even the worm in the reed, The objects that appear as bodies, None of them are not produced from the Alaya. The mind is focused on the object, To this, it is done by subtle "ego-grasping". Without it, it will not arise, Therefore, it is established as the Alaya of the afflicted mind. However many habits there were before, All are produced from conceptual thought. Conceptual thought is the consciousness of mind, Therefore, habits are made by the Alaya. The Alaya of self-nature purity, With the self-nature that pervades everything, Self-nature is originally enlightened, Not created by anyone, not to be sought. Without realizing the self-born great bliss, With the false fabrication of ignorant conceptualization, No result will be accomplished. It is the Alaya that accumulates various things. The Alaya is the condition for examining what to abandon and what to gather, Although it is the object of the five senses, But not cut off by the mind, Although it is the Alaya, it is not consciousness. Also, by the consciousness of mind, Although various habits have been divided, It cannot make the habits grow, Therefore, the consciousness mind is not the Alaya. In whatever appears as the five aspects, Completely integrated with non-duality, When the eight consciousnesses gather and assemble, It is called Alaya consciousness. Also, Vajrasattva, listen. All the sounds that appear inside and outside, Are all from the source of all, the Alaya, Because they arise from the growth of habits. Samsara and Nirvana are also, The non-virtuous actions and the accumulation of merit, Manifested by the perfection of the power of the object, Because everything arises from it, Therefore, it is called Alaya. The Alaya is only Samsara, There is no name for Nirvana.

Through the increase of logic, it becomes accustomed to sleep, and because ignorance has not arisen, there is no cycle. Therefore, it is called the Alaya. The stages and paths of the Bodhisattvas are explained in different categories, but it is only for the convenience of guidance. In reality, there is no Bodhisattva, and the names and virtues that are spoken of are for the benefit of sentient beings, which is what the Tathagata does. Thus, it manifests but is actually non-existent, yet what is said appears to be meaningful. All Buddhas are free from the name of Alaya. This is what Vajrasattva heard. Now, the Alaya consciousness is not obscured by karma, nor is it prophesied. Its nature is like a crystal ball, and it is uncertain whether it is good or bad. Although awareness is self-luminous and clear, if it is not obscured, how can habits be established? Unobscured wisdom is obscuration and affliction. As a basis, what is it the basis of? In reality, it is neither good nor bad. Therefore, it is said to be obscured and not prophesied. In the Tantra of the Great Perfection, the Wheel of Spontaneous Bliss, the sixth chapter explains the nature, definition, and classification of the Alaya. Then, to the assembled retinue, the King Samantabhadra spoke: The root of samsara is the Alaya, without beginning or end, without coming or going. Now it is different, not created by anyone, but existing in its own nature. This is a common and universal teaching. Those who believe that the three times have no coming or going, if there is no coming from the beginning, then where does the end transform from? When the habits are purified at the end, and the mirror-like wisdom transforms, the name of Alaya will be forever empty. Therefore, it is certain that there is coming and going in the beginning, the end, and the present. All dharmas are manifestly enlightened, and on the great self-existent essence, due to ignorance and various signs, the power of habits increases and becomes the Alaya. Therefore, the Alaya is the place of arising, and it arises from ignorance in the beginning. Thus, for sentient beings in the three realms, and for Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas, both common and uncommon, the habits of the Alaya exist in their own nature. Furthermore, listen, Bodhisattvas of the retinue, the Dharma nature is unconditioned in the three times, free from all elaboration, without change, spontaneously accomplished as the great constant, manifestly enlightened as the great self-existent. The Alaya clings to the signs of ignorance, and is the various habits of conceptual thought. Finally, with self-existent wisdom, all habits are destroyed, becoming extremely empty. In the Dharma nature of eternal emptiness,
