If one practices Dharma without understanding its meaning, it will not only be fruitless but also self-destructive, ultimately leading to falling into the endless ocean of samsara. Therefore, Dharma without instructions, even if practiced diligently with body and speech, can only bring suffering and is of no benefit. All Dharma that is not understood is like that. From the Tantra of the Great Perfection, the Wheel of Spontaneous Bliss Gathering Meaning, the chapter on showing the faults of not understanding, the fifty-ninth. Kuntuzangpo also said: If you do not know how to cut off the continuity of the bardo between samsara and nirvana, you are like a merchant without a helmsman, and you will not be liberated from the suffering of birth and death. In the bardo between birth and death, if you do not know how to recognize the Dharmakaya, you are like a dark cave without a lamp, and the darkness of ignorance will never dawn. Also, Vajrasattva, listen! In the bardo of equipoise and post-equipoise, if you do not know how to practice continuously, you are like a spring of water dried up by drought, and view and meditation will not be able to help. In the bardo between object and mind, if you do not cut off the external wrong path, you are like an unpayable debt, and you will not be able to realize your own mind as the Dharmakaya.

In the unawakened self-continuum, acting out anger and attachment like a warrior, because the five poisons are used willfully, one constantly falls into the gate of the Rakshasas. Without obtaining the Samadhi of self-mastery, thinking of one's retinue and distinctions, desiring to be great oneself and gathering a retinue, one falls into the great flesh-eating ghosts. Furthermore, listen, Vajrasattva, without truly and unerringly realizing, one becomes a teacher of wrong views for others, one who does not know oneself but wants to liberate others, one constantly falls into the wheel of Rudra. Even if one is extremely skilled in words and deeds, because of grasping at things as real without realization, For the sake of one's own continuum or the manifestation of things, one falls into the gate of obstacles and crows. By extracting the source from the power of the path of means, and constantly indulging in desire at will, clinging to pleasure without being grasped by the view, one falls into the gate of the great gods and wanders in Samsara. Because of grasping at "I" and "mine" without realization, saying that it is the view and practice of secret mantra, and killing all sentient beings without compassion, one falls into the gate of eternalism and nihilism of the heretics. Furthermore, listen to the essence of accumulation, whatever is done by the power of non-realization, because of being deceived by this body and speech, no matter what of the nine evil deeds are committed, one will certainly fall into hell and wander forever. From the Tantra of the Wheel of Bliss, Self-Arisen from the Meaning of the Great Perfection, the first chapter, which shows the gate of falling into sin through non-realization. Then Vajrasattva, for the benefit of the faithful retinue, before the King of All-Illuminating Mind, with a true mind, made this request: How is the self-mind of Samantabhadra realized? How is the definitive understanding of the meaning gathered? By what can the prior and subsequent negations be done? How does the clarity of one's own mind appear? After hearing the meaning of this request, the King of All-Illuminating Mind gave this instruction: I will explain the meaning that I have realized, do not scatter outwards but focus on the mind. Having spoken thus, all the retinue were overjoyed and had faith, and entered into the meaning with single-pointed determination. At that time, the teacher gave this instruction: If one is not defiled by the arising of Samsara and Nirvana, then it is the self-arisen nature body, at the time of no delusion and realization, because there is no object of applying indicative words, because there is no conceptual thought of grasping at anything, that is self-luminosity in the meaning, self-luminous without adding or subtracting, know that it is the unchanging Dharmakaya. Because one has never been deluded before, there is no need to indicate it, the awareness that has not been indicated also arises in itself, at that time, non-knowing turns into knowing, because there are no habitual tendencies, it is wisdom.
