Counting with the mind creates errors and obscurations; where there is no counting, there are no errors and obscurations. Counting without understanding is error and obscuration; seeing something countable is error and obscuration. To focus one's mind on the essence of enlightenment, enumerating nine differences in view is a mistake. Vows and protecting boundaries diminish one's practice. Seeking activities yields no accomplishment. Looking with the intellect obscures the true nature. Studying the term "ground" does not lead to finding the place. There is no progress on the path of going. Subtle grasping and fixation are separate from the nature of reality. Separating the one into seeing two. Desiring to arise from the great Agamas and Tantras, that Agama is not necessarily existent. In this instruction of reciting the syllable LA, words and letters are falsely attributed. To that which cannot be labeled, names are given, and from giving names, the notion of existence arises. Saying "non-existent" is slander. Speaking of existence and non-existence obscures and confuses. Saying "non-existent" obscures the meaning. Saying "existent" in whatever way, is confused by the words and letters spoken. Therefore, these imputations, exaggerations, errors, and obscurations appear in the minds of those who have thoughts of existence. In the samadhi beyond thought, beyond conceptualization, I do not say there are errors and obscurations. Thus, the Sutra Showing Errors and Obscurations is taught. Then, the Bodhisattva Vajra spoke this explanation of the meaning of the Sutra Showing Errors and Obscurations to the assembled gathering. Listen now, great assembly. On this path of the Great Perfection Yoga, there is no higher or lower order on the path to Buddhahood. If one proceeds without understanding, it is the path of the worldly Brahma. It is not in accordance with spontaneous accomplishment without seeking. If the nature of reality, spontaneously accomplished, is to be traversed, it is like the endlessness of space. There is no end to traversing the path of non-traversing. Therefore, it is said to be a mistaken place on the path. The Great Perfection is liberation from effort and accomplishment. The realm of activity of the Buddhas, such as form and wisdom, is not found by seeking; it is self-arisen wisdom. Just as the six senses have six objects, form and wisdom are self-arisen without cause. If one seeks, it is like a blind person reaching for the sky. This is also said to be a mistaken place on the path. For the Great Perfection activities that cannot be sought, offering to the three roots and giving charity to beings, likewise, the merit of desiring the two accumulations, if there is no unwavering, unmoving strength of samadhi, attachment to objects and the wavering of samadhi, performing offerings and charity becomes a great bondage. This also, one speaks of as a mistaken place of action.

In the Dzogchen view, practice, cause, and effect that have passed beyond, if the arising of the result from the cause is established as a name, then with the cause of virtue, the result is born in the heavens, and with the cause of evil, the result falls into the lower realms. Saying that it arises from what is practiced in this world, accepting virtuous actions and abandoning evil actions, saying that the result arises, generating great joy, this is also said to be going astray on the view, practice, cause, and effect. In the subtle Dharma of Dzogchen that is free from grasping and clinging, those consciousnesses that grasp and cling, the Bodhicitta is the gateway to the Dharma, establishing that even the smallest of particles exists, the gate of coarse and subtle suffering, seeking the path with the solitude of the mind, in a solitary place, the environment is solitary, the mind is solitary, practicing the subtle, when awareness manifests, examining it well, practicing the three subtle ones, practicing the transformation of discursive thoughts, I say that the subtle is a wrong path of the Dharma. That meditation of Dzogchen that is free from faults and virtues, on the Dharmata that is free from grasping and clinging and discursive thoughts, practicing meditation with ten qualities, the ten meditations are the ten obscurations, therefore there is no thought for the ten qualities. Without thinking about the Dharmata that is free from elaboration, without practicing the awareness that is free from grasping and clinging, like the Dharmata of those who are not teachers and not Zen practitioners, clinging to one's own discursive thoughts as wisdom, I say the wrong path of practicing meditation. The ten qualities are the ten obscurations, what are the ten obscurations? Not moving and clear, dissolving and bliss, all together and clear, wisdom arising from the mind, belittling the views of others, showing off one's own views and faults, hoping to have clairvoyance, saying this is unsurpassed, clinging to contentment, these ten are said to be wrong paths and obscurations. What are the eight qualities? Walking and dwelling, standing and sleeping, the four paths of view, practice, and path do not decline, abiding in one place without moving, even though the conduct of the Buddha manifests, not placing hope in it, all the realms of the ten directions, appearing clearly like myrobalan, but without grasping and clinging to it, not fearing the king of demons, not being attached to goddesses, not declining from the true Dharma, even if realizing the Dharmadhatu, not cutting off conditioned roots of virtue. These eight great qualities are the qualities of meditation.
