This is the first chapter. Then, the Lord of Secrets again requested: If samsara is the manifestation of adornment and play, then please explain the five elements that arise in this way. He requested in this way. The Teacher said: The nature, definition, and classification with examples of the five elements, I will explain, you should keep in mind. Explain from the perspective of nature and classification. Five essences and five impurities of the elements. The nature of the five essences is: the five wisdoms that hold characteristics. The nature of the five impurities is: the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. The definition of the five elements is: appearing as the power of awareness, and the appearance of samsara and nirvana from the power. If classified, it should be known as four types: two types of essence and impurity, and each has two types. Son of the lineage, you should remember well! The essence of the five elements is the five lights, and the impurities are earth, water, fire, and wind. The impurities of the essence are flesh and bones, etc., and the essence of the impurities is the five colors of the rainbow. The example is like the rays of the sun, and the light appearing on crystals, etc. Thus it was said. In the Tantra of Great Clarity Beyond Proliferation, the chapter on briefly explaining the five elements is the twenty-second. Again, the Lord of Secrets asked: Alas! Blessed Vajradhara, what are the characteristics of the impure elements? How do they arise from the five essences? What are the characteristics of the pure elements? If dharma nature is combined with meaning, how should it be combined? If impurities dissolve into essence, how should they dissolve? After asking this, the Teacher said: Vajra Holder, listen! The characteristic of earth is hardness, the characteristic of water is moisture, the characteristic of fire is warmth, the characteristic of wind is lightness and movement, and the characteristic of space is vastness and openness. Each should also be distinguished in this way. From the essence of earth, white light arises, and from this, the impurity appears as earth. Similarly, from the essence of the elements, four kinds of light arise, and from this, four kinds of impurities appear. The characteristics of the impurities of the essence are: without hardness, it is stable; without moisture, it is cohesive; without movement, it moves; without warmth, it burns; it has the energy of non-pervasiveness. Dharma nature is the Dharmakaya, which does not change. Non-dual, the earth that is stable without hardness. Dharma nature and Dharmakaya are non-dual, pure and without

In the realm of immaculate purity, everything is gathered within it, water that gathers without moisture. The nature of reality and the Dharmakaya are inseparable; without movement, there is no obstruction; wind that moves without agitation, having not gone, it has arrived at its place. Because the nature of reality and the Dharmakaya are non-dual, great wisdom dwells in its own radiance. Because there is no conceptual thought of appearing as other, there is no burning without heat. Without the appearance of other, it is self-illuminating and self-manifesting, especially wisdom endowed with radiance. Because space is not pervasive, it is radiant. The five impure elements are liberated within the five lights, and the five lights dissolve into the realm of purity. Likewise, the signs also change in sequence. Thus it is said. From the Great Tantra of Freedom from Proliferation, Manifestation of Meaning, the twenty-third chapter, which explains the nature of the elements and combines the meaning of the arising and dissolving sequences. Then, the Lord of Secrets asked: Kye Kye, Blessed Vajradhara, dwelling on the five elements, what is known as a kalpa? Please explain its meaning. Thus he asked. Then, the Teacher spoke again: Kye Kye, Vajra Holder, listen! Explaining the nature of a kalpa: Initially, the realm of wisdom arises, appearing as the arising, the agent of arising, and the object of arising. In the beginning, it is the kalpa of the nature of reality. In the middle, due to the conceptual thought of grasping, the appearance of wisdom dissolves within. It is said to be the kalpa of the vessel world. Finally, it is a kalpa in terms of the grasper and the grasped. Likewise, Buddhas and sentient beings are also kalpas. It is with definition and reason. There are three types of distinctions. Because it abides continuously, it is called a kalpa. Thus it is said. From the Great Tantra of Freedom from Proliferation, Manifestation of Meaning, the twenty-fourth chapter, which explains the three kalpas. From the vision of space, the lamp of clear light arises, the mantra that dispels the darkness of night: A Vajra Hum Ma Ratna Kaya Om Jnana Kala Bag Beku La Ya San Ca Hum Dharma Sara Ko Tu Ha Du Ya Ah. (Tibetan: ཨ་བཛྲ་ཧཾ་མ་རཏྞ་ཀཱ་ཡ་ཨོཾ་ཛྙཱ་ན་ཀ་ལ་བག་བེཀུ་ལ་ཡ་སན་ཙ་ཧཱུྃ་དྷརྨ་ས་ར་ཀོ་ཏུ་ཧ་དུ་ཡ་ཨཱ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ वज्र हुं म रत्न काय ओम् ज्ञाना कल बग् बेकु ल य सन् च हुं धर्म सर को तु ह दु य आ, Sanskrit Romanization: a vajra huṃ ma ratna kāya om jñāna kala bag beku la ya san ca hūṃ dharma sara ko tu ha du ya ā, Literal Chinese Meaning: A Vajra Hum Ma Jewel Body Om Wisdom Kara Bag Beku La Ya San Ca Hum Dharma Sara Guo De Hum Ha De Ya Ah) At that time, the Blessed One, the Great Vajradhara, entered into meditative equipoise on the intention of the three kayas arising from great compassion. Then, the Lord of Secrets asked again: Kye Kye, Blessed Vajradhara, since it appears in the play of samsara, what is the antidote that tames it? From the pure, great Dharmakaya, how does the play of the two kayas arise? Thus he asked. The Teacher replied: The appearance of the two kayas of great compassion.
