Having become inverted and confused, straying into wrong paths and bewilderment. These sentient beings are like blind people stranded in the middle of a vast plain, how pitiful. Now that I have obtained the precious human body with leisure and opportunity, met a qualified lama, and have the opportunity to practice the true Dharma, this is such good fortune! Without being swayed by laziness and procrastination, having listened to and practiced such profound and sacred Dharma, may all mother sentient beings be separated from the karmic appearances, sufferings, and habitual tendencies of each of the six realms, and attain the state of complete enlightenment, may I generate such a mind, this is the most important point. Second, regarding conduct: there are two types of conduct, conduct to be abandoned and conduct to be adopted. First, regarding conduct to be abandoned: one must abandon the three faults of the vessel, the six stains, and the five non-retentions. First, the three faults of the vessel are: not paying attention like ears not turned (to the vessel), not retaining in mind like a vessel with a hole in the bottom, being mixed with afflictions like (a vessel) being poisonous. The six stains are as stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: Pride and disbelief, Lack of interest, External distraction and internal dullness, Listening with boredom are stains. Thus, towards the lama who teaches the Dharma, having the pride of thinking I am more knowledgeable; having disbelief that doubts the qualities of the Dharma and the lama; thinking it's okay whether I obtain the Dharma or not, lacking interest in seeking the Dharma; the mind being externally distracted by the objects of the six senses; the mind being overly withdrawn inward, falling into sleep and dullness; the mind becoming bored due to the Dharma session being too long, etc., all these should be abandoned. The five non-retentions are: retaining the words but not understanding the meaning; understanding the meaning but not remembering the words; retaining without understanding the expression; retaining by reversing the order; misunderstanding the meaning, all these should be abandoned. Second, regarding conduct to be adopted: relying on the four thoughts, possessing the six perfections, emulating the conduct of others (saints). First, relying on the four thoughts is: as stated in the Arrayed Tree Sutra: "Son of good family, you should generate the thought of yourself as a sick person, generate the thought of the Dharma as medicine, generate the thought of diligent practice as nursing the sickness, generate the thought of the virtuous friend as a skilled doctor." Thus it is said.

The six perfections: From the treatise on realizing all the key instructions of Dharma practice: Offer flowers, cushions, etc., excellently. Restrain conduct and uphold vows. Do not harm any living beings. Pray to the Lama. Without distraction, listen to the Lama's instructions. Ask questions to dispel doubts. Tara possesses six qualities. So it is said. Other codes of conduct are shown as follows: Do not teach the Dharma to those who lack faith. Do not wrap your head in the presence of the sick. Not to those with umbrellas, canes, weapons, or covered heads. And so on. Third, how the two, teacher and student, should teach and listen. Teach by binding with five or three great bonds. First, the five great bonds: From the Explanation of Reasoning: Those who wish to speak on the meaning of the Sutras Should give some pith instructions. The pith instruction for that is: With the meaning of the condensed purpose, With the meaning of the words and with the connection, With refutation and answer, it should be explained. So it is said. Second, the three bonds are: Dividing the ground of the text is like a tigress leaping. Emphasizing the meaning of the words is like a turtle crawling. Concluding the occasion is like a lion's swagger. Second, in explaining what is to be explained, there are three: the virtue of the head at the beginning, the virtue of the body in the middle, and the virtue of the conclusion at the end. First, the virtue of the head at the beginning includes: stating the name, stating the offering, and promising to compose. First, explaining the meaning of the name through the five great bonds. First, the meaning of the purpose is: For those of superior faculties, by knowing the meaning of the name, the entire meaning of the text is completely determined, and those of intermediate faculties know to which side of the Greater or Lesser Vehicle it belongs, and even those of inferior faculties know the relationship between the name and the meaning, making it easier to find the scriptures, etc. As it is said: If it were not named, All the world would be confused. Therefore, the Protector, with skillful means, Named the dharmas. So it is said. Second, the meaning of the connection is: In general, whatever Dharma is taught, it is necessary to first teach from the meaning of the head. And the first thing that appears is the statement of the name. That name also has three necessities: faith in the Dharma arises, imprints are left on the language, and blessings arise in the lineage, so the two languages are combined.
