From the outset, all the Buddha's teachings would become untrue, and the efforts to attain Buddhahood, etc., would become meaningless, because all dharmas lack inherent existence and are empty. If that were the case, then this tenet of the Madhyamikas, who assert that all dharmas are empty and without inherent existence, would be utterly unreasonable. If all dharmas exist without inherent existence, then the dharmas from the arising and ceasing of the world up to Buddhahood would be true, and the efforts of yogis to practice the path would not become meaningless. Therefore, all dharmas are not empty, but exist with inherent existence. This is what they say. Secondly, the actual response to dispel wrong views is: If all dharmas are not empty, but exist with inherent existence, then whatever exists with inherent existence is not empty. Since there is neither action nor agent, everything from the arising and ceasing of the world up to Buddhahood would be untrue for you. Likewise, all sentient beings born in any of the six realms would have no death or rebirth, etc., and would remain there perpetually, because they exist with inherent existence. Similarly, those who experience the suffering of samsara would have no opportunity to be liberated from it, because suffering exists with inherent existence. Likewise, it would be unreasonable for yogis who practice the path to attain qualities such as abandonment and realization, because these exist with inherent existence. If you wish to manifest arising and ceasing, death and rebirth, etc., and the qualities of abandonment and realization, then this contradicts your assertion of inherent existence, because these are dependently originated and without inherent existence. Therefore, it is only in emptiness, the absence of inherent existence, and dependent origination that all virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral phenomena are reasonable. The Noble One also said: 'If all this were not empty, there would be no arising and no ceasing. The four noble truths would be impossible for you.' 'For whom emptiness is possible, everything is possible. Whatever exists by its own nature is permanent, since it cannot be non-existent.' And, 'You transfer your own faults entirely to me, like one who, riding a horse, forgets the horse itself.' Therefore, you, from beginningless time, have been speaking meaningless nonsense due to the power of sheer inversion, which is unreasonable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, whatever arises dependently is not non-existent, just as smoke arises dependent on fire. Whatever is non-existent does not arise dependent on anything, like a rabbit's horn. Whatever arises dependently is also not established by its own nature, like the illusory men and women that arise dependent on a magician. **Showing that the self-system has no acceptance** Thirdly, in order to destroy the conceptual thoughts of beings with compassion and to place them in liberation, whatever affirmation or negation of the ultimate meaning is done, it is shown that the self-system has no acceptance. This includes questions and answers. The first is: You Madhyamikas (中观派, Zhōng guān pài, The Middle Way school), assert that all phenomena are empty, free from elaboration, and without inherent existence. If that is the case, then no matter from what cause or condition this definitive knowledge that all phenomena are empty arises, or in what essence it arises, it will become inherently established, and similarly, all phenomena will also become inherently established. Thus, all your negations and affirmations of non-inherent existence will become ultimately true. If you yourselves do not have such definitive knowledge, then because you are not certain yourselves, you will not be able to generate certainty in others. Therefore, all such negations and affirmations, and the writing of treatises, will become meaningless. Therefore, this Madhyamika system is unreasonable because it is devoid of reason. The second is: Because there is no uncertainty, doubt, or certainty for the Madhyamikas, how could there be any reliance on that, or any definitive knowledge, certainty, or acceptance that is its antidote? There is not even the slightest bit of any phenomenon that is inherently established, because it is free from all elaboration. The mind also does not perceive anything as inherently existent, because the mind also becomes inseparable from that freedom from elaboration. Therefore, the characteristics of subject and object, knowable and knower, are never present. Because there is no certainty, determination, acceptance, or grasping of 'this is it,' this definitive knowledge is not born from this cause and condition, nor is it established in this way, just as the rabbit's horn is not perceived, and therefore its cause and condition, and its essence, are not perceived. The Noble One (referring to Nāgārjuna) also said: 'I am without fault, I have no acceptance. If I had any acceptance, then I would have this fault. If by direct perception, etc., some object were perceived, and an argument or refutation were made, then because these are absent, I have no fault.'
