Diligence: The diligence of benefiting sentient beings. Second, there are four ways to generate diligence: abandoning the obstacles and adverse conditions to diligence, contemplating the assembly of favorable conditions and supporting forces; based on this, initiating diligence and striving diligently; and thereby making body and mind capable. The first has two aspects: recognizing the unfavorable factors and adopting methods to abandon them. This has three aspects: preventing laziness in external affairs; rejecting attachment to bad deeds; and rejecting discouragement or self-deprecation. This has three aspects: rejecting laziness towards what should be obtained; rejecting laziness towards the means of obtaining it; and rejecting timidity towards the place where one dwells and practices. Second, accumulating the assembly of favorable conditions and supporting forces has four aspects: generating the power of aspiration, generating the power of stability, generating the power of joy, and generating the power of renunciation. Learning the Perfection of Dhyana (meditative concentration) has five aspects: the nature of Dhyana, the means of entering into its practice, the distinctions of Dhyana, how to practice during practice, and the summary of their meanings. Learning the Perfection of Prajna (wisdom) has five aspects: the nature of Prajna, the means of entering into its generation, the distinctions of Prajna, how to practice during practice, and the summary of their meanings. Third, the distinctions of Prajna have three aspects: realizing ultimate truth, realizing conventional truth, and the Prajna of realizing the activities of benefiting sentient beings. Second, the four means of gathering (Sangraha-vastu) for maturing the minds of others have five aspects: the nature of the four means of gathering, the reason for establishing them as four, the functions of the four means of gathering, the need to rely on them because of gathering a retinue, and a brief explanation in detail. This has two aspects: pleasant speech that is in accordance with worldly customs, and pleasant speech that is in accordance with teaching the correct Dharma. In particular, learning the last two Perfections (Dhyana and Prajna) has six aspects: the benefits of cultivating Shamatha (calm abiding) and Vipashyana (insight), showing that these two are the collection of all Samadhi (meditative absorption), the nature of Shamatha and Vipashyana, the reason why both must be cultivated, the manner of determining the order, and the methods of cultivating each individually. This has three aspects: the method of cultivating Shamatha, the method of cultivating Vipashyana, and the method of combining these two. The first has three aspects: showing the conditions for Shamatha, the method of cultivating Shamatha based on it, and the standard for achieving Shamatha through cultivation. The first has six aspects: abiding in a suitable environment, having few desires, being content, completely abandoning many activities, completely purifying moral discipline, and completely abandoning thoughts of desire and so on. The method of cultivating Shamatha based on this has two aspects: preparation and the actual practice. This has two aspects: the body's... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
