How to meditate through behavior? Here is a discussion of the stages of meditation. This section is divided into two parts: first, how to generate Samadhi without faults; and second, how to generate Śamatha-Vipaśyanā based on that. The first part is further divided into three parts: what should be done before the mind is focused on the object of meditation? What should be done when focusing on the object of meditation? What should be done after focusing on the object of meditation? What should be done when focusing on the object of meditation is further divided into two parts: first, identifying the object of meditation as the basis on which the mind rests; and second, how to focus the mind on that object. The first part is further divided into two parts: first, generally defining the object of meditation; and second, identifying the specific object of meditation for the current practice. The first part is further divided into three parts: first, directly indicating the object of meditation; second, explaining who should focus on what; and third, explaining the types of objects of meditation. The second part, how to focus the mind on the object of meditation, is divided into three parts: first, establishing the faultless method; second, contemplating the faulty method; and third, explaining the duration of the session. The third part, what to do after focusing on the object of meditation, is divided into two parts: first, what to do when dullness and agitation arise; and second, what to do when free from dullness and agitation. The first part is further divided into two parts: first, adopting remedies when dullness and agitation are not recognized; and second, adopting remedies that strive to abandon them even when they are recognized. The first part is further divided into two parts: first, defining the characteristics of dullness and agitation; and second, the method of generating awareness to recognize them during meditation. The second part, adopting remedies that do not strive to abandon them even when they are recognized, is divided into two parts: first, the method of identifying thoughts and preventing dullness and agitation; and second, identifying the causes on which the arising of dullness and agitation depends. The third part, the stages of generating Śamatha-Vipaśyanā based on that, is divided into three parts: first, the actual stages of generating Śamatha-Vipaśyanā; second, the method of accomplishing it through the six powers; and third, the method of having four types of attention. The first part has nine stages: first, placement; second, continuous placement; third, replacement; fourth, close placement; fifth, taming; sixth, pacifying; seventh, completely pacifying; eighth, single-pointedness; and ninth, equanimity. The extent to which Śamatha-Vipaśyanā is accomplished through meditation is divided into three parts: first, explaining the boundary between accomplishing and not accomplishing Śamatha-Vipaśyanā; second, generally explaining the method of traversing the path based on Śamatha-Vipaśyanā; and third, specifically explaining the method of traversing the mundane path. The first part is divided into two parts: first, explaining the actual meaning; and second, having attention and contemplation. The third part, specifically explaining the method of traversing the mundane path, is divided into two parts: first, explaining that Śamatha-Vipaśyanā must be attained before practicing the path with aspects of quiescence and insight. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And, the way to rely on Śamatha (calm abiding) to become detached from desire. Second, the way to train in Vipaśyanā (insight meditation) has four aspects: showing the collection of Vipaśyanā, the detailed divisions of Vipaśyanā, the way to meditate on Vipaśyanā, and the extent to which Vipaśyanā is accomplished through meditation. The first has three aspects: correctly identifying the provisional and definitive meanings, how the intention of Nāgārjuna arose, and the way to establish the view of emptiness. This has two aspects: the order of entering into Suchness, and the actual establishment of Suchness. This has three aspects: identifying the object to be refuted by reasoning, whether that refutation is done by consequentialism (Prasaṅga) or autonomy (Svātantrika), and how the view arises in the mindstream based on that action. The first has three aspects: the reason why the object to be refuted must be well identified, refuting the other's system of refuting without identifying the object to be refuted, and the way to identify the object to be refuted in one's own system. Second, refuting the other's system of refuting without identifying the object to be refuted has two parts: refuting the identification of the object to be refuted as being too broad, and refuting the identification of the object to be refuted as being too narrow. The first has two parts: stating the assertion, and showing that it is not reasonable. This has two parts: showing that the system blocks the uncommon characteristics of Madhyamaka, and showing that the stated harms do not hold. The first has three parts: identifying the characteristics of Madhyamaka, how that system blocks them, and how the Madhyamikas respond to that. Second, showing that the stated harms do not hold has four aspects: refuting by examining whether reasoning can withstand scrutiny, thus not being able to establish harm; refuting by examining whether valid cognition is established, thus not being able to establish harm; refuting by examining whether it is a fourfold origination, thus not being able to establish harm; and showing that refuting all four possibilities of things existing or not existing, etc., cannot be a harm. Third, identifying the object to be refuted in one's own system has three aspects: identifying the object to be refuted in reality, how those refutations apply or do not apply to the objects to be refuted, and explaining whether or not to apply the distinction of ultimate truth to the object to be refuted. Second, whether that refutation of the object to be refuted is done by consequentialism or autonomy has two parts: identifying the meaning of consequentialism and autonomy, and following whose views do they generate the view in the mindstream. The first has two parts: refuting the other's system, and establishing one's own system. The first has two parts: stating the assertion, and refuting that. This has four aspects: refuting the first system, refuting the second system, refuting the third system, refuting the fourth system. Second, establishing one's own system has two parts: self- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
