Taking up the practice of the perfections (paramita): How to make body and mind serviceable. First, two parts: identifying adverse factors and employing means to overcome them. This has three: preventing the laziness of procrastination, rejecting attachment to bad actions, and overcoming feeling inferior or self-deprecation. This has three: overcoming feeling inferior about what is to be obtained, overcoming feeling inferior about the means to obtain it, and overcoming shrinking back from the place where one competes. Second, accumulating the host of conducive conditions, which has four: generating the power of aspiration, steadfastness, joy, and the power of relinquishment. Learning the perfection of concentration (dhyana) has five aspects: the nature of concentration, the means to engage in cultivating it, the divisions of concentration, how to act during cultivation, and a summary of those points. Learning the perfection of wisdom (prajna) also has five aspects: the nature of wisdom, the means to engage in generating it, the divisions of wisdom, how to act during cultivation, and a summary of those points. The divisions of wisdom have three: Realizing ultimate truth (paramartha-satya), realizing conventional truth (samvriti-satya), and the wisdom of realizing what to do for sentient beings. Second, ripening the minds of others: the four means of gathering (sangraha-vastu) has five aspects: the nature of the four means of gathering, the reason for dividing them into four, the function of the four means of gathering, the need to rely on gathering a retinue, and a brief and detailed explanation. This has two: pleasing speech that accords with worldly customs, and pleasing speech that accords with teaching the true Dharma. In particular, learning the last two perfections has six aspects: the benefits of obtaining and cultivating calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipashyana), showing that these two are the collection of all samadhi, the nature of calm abiding and insight, the reason why both must be cultivated, the way of ascertaining the order, and the way of learning each individually. This has three: the way of learning calm abiding, the way of learning insight, and the way of combining the two. First, the way of learning calm abiding has three aspects: relying on the conditions for calm abiding, the way of cultivating calm abiding by relying on those, and the measure of accomplishing calm abiding through cultivation. First, the conditions to rely on have six: dwelling in a suitable place, wanting little, being content, completely abandoning many activities, completely purifying ethical conduct, and completely abandoning thoughts of desire and so forth. The way of cultivating calm abiding by relying on those has two aspects: the preparation and the actual practice. This has two aspects: with what bodily posture to meditate, and explaining the order of meditation itself. This has two aspects: the way to generate a samadhi without faults, and the order of the arising of mind-abiding by relying on that. First, it has three aspects: mind --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
