Collection of Teachings of Master Tsongkhapa JTs148 A Detailed Outline of the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment 13-1-1b ༄༅། །A Detailed Outline of the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment ༄༅༅། །Namo Manjughoshaya (藏文:ན་མོ་མཉྫུ་གྷོ་ཥཱ་ཡ།,梵文天城体:नमो मञ्जुघोषाया,梵文罗马拟音:Namo Mañjughoṣāya,汉语字面意思:Homage to Manjughosha). The guidance on the stages of the path to enlightenment is divided into four parts: To show the purity of the source of the Dharma by demonstrating the greatness of the author; to generate respect for the instructions by demonstrating the greatness of the Dharma; how to listen to and teach the Dharma that possesses both greatnesses; and the order of how to tame disciples with actual guidance. The first part is divided into three: The manner of taking birth with a complete lineage; the manner of acquiring qualities based on that support; and the manner of acting for the benefit of the teachings after acquiring those qualities. The manner of acquiring qualities based on that support is divided into two: The manner of acquiring the qualities of learning through extensive study; and the manner of acquiring the qualities of realization through proper practice. Among these, there are three: The training in higher discipline; 13-1-2a The training in higher concentration; the training in higher wisdom. The first part is divided into three: The manner of possessing the vows of individual liberation; the manner of possessing the vows of a Bodhisattva; the manner of possessing the vows of a Vidyadhara. The training in concentration is divided into two: common and uncommon. The training in wisdom is divided into two: common and uncommon. The manner of acting for the benefit of the teachings is divided into two: The manner of acting in India; and the manner of acting in Tibet. Second, to generate respect for the instructions by demonstrating the greatness of the Dharma, there are four: 13-1-2b The greatness of realizing that all teachings are not contradictory; the greatness of all scriptures appearing as instructions; the greatness of easily attaining the intention of the Buddhas; the greatness of great misdeeds naturally ceasing. Third, how to listen to and teach the Dharma that possesses both greatnesses is divided into three: The manner of listening; the manner of teaching; and the manner of what should be done in common at the end. The first part is divided into three: Thinking about the benefits of listening to the Dharma; showing respect and service to the Dharma and the speaker; the actual manner of listening. Among these, there are two: Abandoning the three faults of the vessel; relying on the six thoughts. Among these, there are six: Generating the thought of oneself as a sick person; generating the thought of the speaker as a doctor; generating the thought of the meaning as medicine; generating the thought of diligently practicing as curing the illness; generating the thought of the Tathagata as a noble being; generating the thought of the Dharma as abiding forever.
