The feeling of experiencing any of the three feelings, whether pleasant or unpleasant. The ability to distinguish blue, yellow, etc., without mixing them, these five are the five all-pervasive consciousnesses. The common ground of samsara and nirvana refers to the potential of the ground itself to manifest ground-appearances through the practice of Trekchö. Tögal refers to the actual arising of ground-appearances. The initial ground refers to not thinking about an initial beginning, but rather being in the state of dying right now, where the previous winds and mind have been gathered, and the subsequent winds and mind have not yet arisen. It is the state before the appearance of both samsara and nirvana, hence it is called initial. Because it has the potential to manifest both samsara and nirvana, it is called the "Base, Spontaneous Perfection, Precious Womb." If one realizes when the ground-appearance arises from that ground, one will attain Buddhahood by distinguishing the six characteristics. If one does not realize, one will fall into samsara with grasping and clinging. The distinction between Tsal and Rolpa: Omniscient Longchenpa said, "If you do not even know Tsal and what arises from Tsal, what need is there to speak of the nature of Bodhicitta?" Here, Tsal refers to the unimpeded state of the energy of wisdom. Rolpa refers to the manifesting aspect of the energy of compassion and awareness. Zhi-gnas and Lhag-thong: The essence is the primordially pure, uncompounded nature of reality, the aspect free from elaboration is quiescence (zhi-gnas). The unimpeded aspect of the energy of wisdom is insight (lhag-thong) or wisdom (sherab). Because it is excellent knowledge, it is called wisdom. When these two are in union, it is called the view or awareness of Dzogchen. The distinction between Sem and Rig, the separation of four parts and three parts: The three parts refer to being free from the thoughts of the three times (past, present, future). The four parts refer to realizing the awareness of the three kayas being inseparable. The key to the initial distinction is that when realization occurs, the thoughts of the three times also naturally liberate, therefore there is no acceptance or rejection of samsara and nirvana. For example, the part of the ocean that is separate from the waves is awareness. The conditioned phenomena of the waves themselves being moved by the wind, is like the thoughts of the three times. When the key is realized, the waves themselves arise from the ocean and eventually dissolve back into the water, therefore there is no acceptance or rejection. Again, like a clear and bottomless ocean, is the aspect of awareness. When a stone is thrown into the clear center, the gradually appearing patterns cannot remain for even a moment and naturally liberate. Similarly, the manifesting aspects are also naturally liberated.

The Differentiation of Mind and Rigpa: Rigpa, though the radiance of wisdom is unceasing, does not waver or shift in any circumstance, it is pervasive, vast, and free from bias. For example, like the moon in the empty sky, though the outer appearance changes, the inner clarity remains. The aspect of mind follows after the objects of the six consciousnesses, engaging in various objects. For example, like the fifteenth-day moon, it moves with the environment. Furthermore, the Differentiation of the Abiding Essence: The essence of rigpa is free from inner and outer, extremes and center, transparent, naked, bare, and its nature is free from the husk of experiential clinging. The essence of mind is an experienceable emptiness that abides in a state of blank bewilderment. Furthermore, the Differentiation of the Emanating Potential: The potential radiance of rigpa-emptiness is unceasing, so it appears pervasively and vastly without intermingling. The potential of mind is merely an aspect of experience and clarity, an appearance that abides in one direction, merely the state of the non-conceptual alaya. The All-Creating King says: 'Since self-arisen wisdom does not conceptualize objects, the imprints of conceptualization do not stain it.' Furthermore, the Differentiation of the Play Arising from the Potential: The aspect of compassionate rigpa-radiance, however it arises, is such that it arises without attachment or obstruction, and from the very moment of arising, it is the nature of liberation, such is the characteristic of arising. For example, like a drop of mercury that does not mix with the earth. The Treasury of Qualities says: 'Though rigpa dawns upon an object, appearance does not overwhelm it, like mercury falling on the ground.' Furthermore, Dzogchen says: 'The manner of arising is the same as before, but the manner of liberation is crucially different.' Furthermore, the All-Creating King says: 'Self-arisen wisdom is known from the beginning. The wisdom that conceptualizes objects arises from objects, therefore it is not self-arisen.' It is also said: 'The perfection of the self-potential of wisdom, and the arising of mind-thought upon an object, are similar, oh so similar, but actually mistaken.' Those that arise from the aspect of mind have the nature of grasper and grasped. For example, like a raindrop falling on dry earth, it mixes with the object. Furthermore, in the expanse of rigpa-emptiness, one must know that there is no liberation or confusion. It is said that the term 'liberation' is applied to the aspect of compassionate rigpa-radiance, merely in terms of slight awareness or non-awareness. Furthermore, the Differentiation of the Key Points of the Instructions: The Mind Class primarily considers the aspects of arising to be the cause of samsara, namely thoughts, aggregates, and afflictions, and examines and analyzes them. Starting with observing the essence, etc., one purifies movement and abiding.
