All lands are like rays of the sun; self-originated wisdom is like a mountain; all arising thoughts are like plants and trees; self-originated wisdom is like an ocean, without surface or bottom; all arising afflictions are like waves of water. Self-originated wisdom is like a mirror; all arising afflictions are like reflections in a mirror. The four reliances are: do not rely on consciousness, rely on wisdom; do not rely on provisional meaning, rely on definitive meaning; do not rely on relative truth, rely on ultimate truth; do not rely on the person, rely on the Dharma. The sharp follow the Dharma, the dull follow the person. Do not make the person the reason, but make the Dharma the reason. This was in the past, at the seat of Khro skyabs rgyal po, when Dzogchen Dge mang and Mdo yi mkhyen brtse met, Dzogchen Dge mang asked Mdo's mkhyen brtse, "What is your reliance?" He replied, "My reliance is renunciation." Dzogchen Dge mang said, "Someone like you did not renounce through the ultimate of the three doors of expression in front of the four assemblies, but renounced after realizing self-originated wisdom." Immediately, Dzogchen Dge mang prostrated to him. This is an example of following a person because of the Dharma. Mdo mkhyen brtse's conduct was like that of a householder with attachments. Also, regarding faith: Complete with the fundamental view, all aspects of subtle and coarse thoughts, and the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, are purified on the basis, this is pure faith. Joyfully entering into it with aspiration is aspiring faith. Being free from doubt about whether it is so or not, and believing, is believing faith. Wanting to accomplish it joyfully is desiring faith. In this way, having gained certainty oneself is certain faith. Knowing that self-originated wisdom is primordially inseparable, and having unwavering intention towards it, therefore, in order to realize that one does not turn back from it, this is irreversible faith. By remembering the qualities of the Three Jewels, one must generate faith by relying on them. It is said that one must know that among these three, it is the Dharma that distinguishes the Buddha and the Sangha. Devotion should also be directed towards the root guru who possesses the three kindnesses, and not towards just any old monk.

Paltrul Rinpoche said: "Empowerment ripens the three doors into the three vajras. Giving instructions severs all the delusions of the mind in the three times, like cutting a stack of straw. Giving subsequent instructions including the lineage order, establishes one in the position of the King of Vajras. This inherits the lineage of the Victorious Ones, holds the key to the treasury, and protects the remaining retinue of disciples." Zhabdrung Rinpoche gave Rashel Kunzang Sonam a monastic robe as a symbol of holding the victory banner of the doctrine of monastic robes. He gave a white conch shell as a symbol of turning the wheel of Dharma of the three vehicles. He gave a portion of tea and grain as a symbol of protecting the remaining retinue of disciples. Although Lord Atisha placed his palms together at his heart when mentioning the names of other root gurus, he placed his palms together at the crown of his head when mentioning the name of Serlingpa. When asked the reason for this, he said: "The single thought of bodhichitta that arose in me is due to the kindness of Serlingpa. Although there is no difference in terms of qualities from other root gurus, it is a difference in kindness." In the instructions on entering the path of Dharma, it says: "The vow of refuge is the basis of all vows, like the earth." Therefore, a person who has obtained the vow of refuge and does not violate it, can properly protect the vows of the Hearers, Bodhisattvas, and Mantras without violating them. As it is said in the scriptures: "Vows are all there, but there are none for those who have not taken refuge." If one has not obtained the vow of refuge, or has obtained it and then violated it, then that person will permanently lose the vows of the Hearers, Bodhisattvas, and Mantras. The difference between the refuge of outsiders and insiders is said to be: temporarily taking refuge in the Three Jewels as a reliance. Ultimately, it is taking refuge in the Dharmata Vajra Refuge, that is, the manifestation of the awareness of the indivisibility of the three bodies. What is that? It is the self-arisen primordial wisdom itself, clearing away the two obscurations and their habitual tendencies from the part of ignorance, and all wisdom and qualities spontaneously and effortlessly flourishing, therefore it is taking refuge in the Buddha. The sphere free from elaboration and beyond expression is the [essence] of all tantras.
