Even if a semblance of emptiness and luminosity, like the sky, arises, it is like a painted moon. Just as the meaning of the Great Perfection's mind-essence is pointed out, if one directly ascertains the unborn nature of one's own mind without needing to modify or examine it, then that is the actual appearance of exemplary wisdom, like the moon's reflection in water. Although the images of the sun and moon appear in water, what appears in the water are all the qualities that the actual sun and moon possess. Meditators who realize such a state of mind, whether it be Mahamudra or Great Perfection, do not realize it through inference; rather, they realize it through their own direct experience. Therefore, many holy beings have said that this is the path of seeing (Darshana-marga) in mantra. The absence of one hundred and twelve qualities, etc., is explained in terms of the obscurations of the expanding body, etc. Longchen Rabjam (Klong chen rab 'byams, 1308-1364) said that although it is not the actual path of seeing in mantra, it is the actual realization of the suchness of reality. Since the path of seeing must possess one hundred and twelve qualities, etc., although this is the direct manifestation of self-awareness, it is regarded as exemplary wisdom. The wisdom of meaning is regarded as the path of seeing, like seeing the actual moon. In short, whether the meaning of primordial self-awareness is realized at the time when self-appearance is unceasing, or whether it is realized at the time of the luminosity at the limit of the three appearances, awareness-emptiness dawns nakedly. If one knows that, knower and known are not different, but it dawns as self-luminous. The one who realizes is not a subtle mind, but self-born wisdom knows it self-luminously. After experiencing the luminosity at the limit of the three appearances, the gross mind remembers it, and this is because self-born wisdom, which pervades all knowledge, knows it in a way that cannot be separated from the mind. In the lamp of self-born wisdom, the Great Perfection Root Tantra of the Sound Current speaks of five distinctions: the wisdom of the ground-abiding self-bornness acts as the basis for all phenomena; the wisdom of staring at appearances directly realizes the expanse of awareness; the wisdom of unceasing memory distinguishes clarity and purity in equipoise. These are in accordance with self-born wisdom and are shown to be of the same essence as the corresponding dharmas, because they are self-abiding wisdom, so they are a part of wisdom, and are not encompassed by conceptual thought and grasping mind, as the Omniscient One (Longchenpa) said. Establishing the view through hearing and thinking is also
