Thoughts about death never arise, always thinking there is no other place to go except death, this is certain. Know that death draws nearer with each passing year, month, and day. Death is a small obstacle; for us who are perpetually wandering in samsara, the method of benefit and liberation is none other than virtuous deeds. Even if one were to die suddenly from illness tonight, it would be good to die in the midst of practice. Regardless of obstacles and age, as one grows older, one must increase diligence in virtuous practice to live out one's life. Do not rely on rituals and methods; please keep this in mind. In general, most practitioners and lamas nowadays, whether monks, nuns, or realized beings, do much hardship and diligence in retreat, practice vows, etc., in their youth. However, in their later years, as they approach old age and death, they abandon these. They turn to village rituals and become leaders of others, indulging immoderately in offerings. They say they used to do such things, but now they are old and their bodies cannot handle it. Although these people are deceiving themselves, saying that they lack the strength to strive for the next life, it is actually a lack of mental strength. If one can die through the hardship of practicing Dharma, one can purify the sins and obscurations of all lifetimes, so what is there to regret? Nowadays, it seems rare to find someone who understands this importance, so these words are the deepest heartfelt advice; please keep them firmly in mind. Furthermore, all involvement in worldly virtuous activities has the potential to accumulate vast amounts of merit, but it seems that all practitioners nowadays cannot do without meat and alcohol. In particular, no matter what virtuous deeds are done, from birth to death, they must kill living beings, and this kind of phenomenon is very common. Engaging in the alcohol trade and other such activities are not considered good in any of the sutras and tantras. The Bhagavan said that among all offerings, the offering of alcohol, the offering of meat, the offering of weapons, the offering of poison, and the offering made by stealing the wealth of others are the sole causes of being born in hell. Therefore, no matter how great or small the virtuous deed, it is mixed with sins such as killing.

Nothing else is needed; this itself is very important. Please keep this in mind. In all aspects of practice, let whatever arises be recognized as the self-nature of awareness, from the natural state of original, unadulterated wisdom. Focus solely on recognizing everything that arises as your own nature. If you can remember your dreams and remain in control during the night, that is also important, as it is brought about by self-awareness. Even if you cannot remember your dreams, as you fall asleep, without being interrupted by other thoughts, fall asleep in the self-nature of awareness, and as you awaken, continue that same self-awareness. When you wake up in the morning, do not first greet ordinary discursive thoughts, but let the awareness that recognizes your own nature arise naturally. If you constantly strive in this way, even at the time of death, the key points of the Bardo teachings are included in this. Sleep and death are the same, except for the degree of intensity. Therefore, please let awareness bring about all thoughts, illnesses, suffering, death, and so on. Abstaining from meat and alcohol is extremely important. Generally, it is said in Secret Mantra that one does not abstain from meat, alcohol, desirable objects, etc., but that is intended for yogis who have realized their understanding and are able to transform conduct that transcends the ordinary into the path. For example, Guru Padmasambhava, Tilopa, and Virupa are said to have drunk all the wine from five hundred taverns in a single day and imprisoned the sun to extend the drinking time. Except for accomplished ones who can overcome all the negative effects of intoxication, for beginners, indulging in meat and alcohol is said to be a violation of the tantric vows. Only male and female yogis who have attained accomplishment can properly perform the Tsok Khorlo (feast gathering); ordinary people cannot do it. The offerings for the Tsok must also be worth more than eighteen gold srangs; otherwise, it is said that the Tsok Khorlo is not valid. But nowadays, we are not in a position to accomplish this. Now, during ceremonies and empowerments, we only perform it symbolically, which is called the offering of the Tsok. Practitioners take the leftovers offered to the deities of the mandala as substances of accomplishment. Therefore, the behavior and actions of today's practitioners, in every aspect, do not conform to the doctrines of either Sutra or Tantra Buddhism.
