It is said that monastics like the nun Utpala were saying that pure lands were useless. Finally, when they asked the Teacher, he said that Brahma with the matted locks seeing it was good. Then, through the power of the Buddha's blessing, all the retinue for a short time directly saw the pure land of Manifest Joy in the East. Just as a drop of mercury does not mix with dust when it falls on the ground, one must distinguish between the basis of appearance and the dharma of appearance. If you do that, you must know this opposite aspect that does not want the basis of appearance and the dharma of appearance to be one. He said that all dharmas must be realized nakedly as rigpa. On that, he did not say that mind and rigpa are the same. If he said that, then just as mind has arising and ceasing, rigpa would consequently have arising and ceasing. Or, if you think that object and rigpa are one, then just as outer objects are established, rigpa would consequently be substantial. Or, just as rigpa is unconditioned, the objects of the outer six aggregates would consequently be unconditioned. Because rigpa is considered to be unconditioned and substance is the same, there are many faults, so if you do not know how to distinguish the opposite aspects, you will go into confusion and contradiction. Therefore, you must know how to distinguish the opposite aspects. There is also a great meaning in saying that rigpa is naked. If you extract and protect the naked rigpa on the basis of appearance, then even if the appearance of the object does not stop, rigpa will not be moved by the object. The object does not contaminate rigpa. Without that, like a drop of mercury that does not mix with dust. Because it does not mix with the object, rigpa is naked. It is symbolized by examples such as the moon in the empty sky and a drop of mercury. If you know how to cultivate such rigpa well, all grasping will go into self-liberation and abide in the state of its own nature. That is called rigpa's own state of meditation. Mind-holding meditation is contrived. In general, just naming the opposite aspect of rigpa's wisdom as view, meditation, and conduct, there is actually no difference between view, meditation, and conduct. From the point of view of recognizing one's own face, it is view; from the point of view of abiding in its own state, it is meditation; from the point of view of whatever arises becoming self-liberated, it is conduct; the spontaneously accomplished result of the three kayas. Not transgressing that is the samaya. Therefore, if you do not lose the self-nature of the clear light of rigpa-emptiness dharmakaya, then whatever arises has no chance to accumulate habitual tendencies, but is liberated. In what is to be known, there is no possibility of not being liberated. Because liberation is self-liberation by itself, without other causes, thoughts of good, bad, and intermediate
