Furthermore, for beginners, there are two types of śamatha (zhi, 梵文śamatha) and vipaśyanā (guan, 梵文vipaśyanā): with signs and without signs, or with support and without support. The first, with signs, is when the mind focuses on an object of attention; without signs is when one does not focus on any object of attention and abides in the natural state, this is śamatha. Using wisdom to determine the outer and inner environment and beings, this is vipaśyanā. Furthermore, when the mind is not agitated, it is śamatha; being free from dullness and sleep is vipaśyanā; being free from mental grasping of meditation is śamatha; being free from the conceptual analysis of consciousness is vipaśyanā. Thus it is said. Here, the essence of awareness is primordial emptiness, the dharmadhatu free from elaboration, the peaceful abiding free from action and agent. The energy of that dharmadhatu is the uninterrupted wisdom of vipaśyanā, therefore the two are inseparable. This is the very awareness of the manifestation of dharmata. This is to continuously maintain one's own nature with pure, original mindfulness, and when distracted in the post-meditation state, to repeatedly rely on mindfulness to maintain one's own nature, instead of not looking to the meaning of the dharmakaya beyond the mind, following statements such as "all mind-made fabrications are emptiness," one will fall into the abyss of ignorance... On the view, one must make a thorough decision, therefore "deciding" and "thoroughly deciding" have the same meaning. Now, the extensive explanation of conduct: Now, regarding the ways of liberation at the time of death for these, there are two types: common and uncommon. The common ones are further divided into two types: with effort and without effort. With effort is for those with a mind that perceives appearances as objects, that is, whatever thoughts arise, abiding without alteration is cultivating the intention of spontaneous accomplishment. Without effort is for those with a mind of self-manifesting awareness, that is, when awareness appears nakedly, whether good thoughts, bad thoughts, or neutral thoughts arise, all thoughts, as soon as they arise, dissolve like snow falling on a hot stone, arising and dissolving without continuation. There are five types of uncommon liberation: primordial liberation, self-liberation, direct liberation, extreme liberation, and one liberation. Although there are five, among them, self-liberation is the three unique characteristics that directly demonstrate its key points. If one does not have confidence in the arising and liberation in practice, and only rests in the samadhi of abiding in the mind, it is like a traveler resting temporarily after a long journey. For example, the heretical ascetic abiding in samadhi for twelve years. Thus and so on, holding one's own view as superior.

It is said that this was deceived by smoke. Merely practicing meditation with calm abiding and insight (shamatha-vipashyana) will not transcend the place of fault in the higher realms. The contaminated virtuous deeds of the seven consciousnesses will cast one into the three good realms, and non-virtuous deeds will cast one into the three bad realms. On the basis of the alaya consciousness, if one is mostly accustomed to the experience of happiness, one will be born in the first of the six desire realms. If one is mostly accustomed to clarity, one will be born in the twelve abodes of individual beings, excluding the five noble grounds that transcend the seven formless realms. If one is mostly accustomed to non-conceptualization, one will be born in the four formless realms, and if one blocks the six consciousnesses, one will be born among the long-lived gods. Therefore, it is said that the creator of the three realms is the mind. Merely abiding in the mind does not have the key to spontaneous liberation, so attachment, aversion, etc., and virtuous and non-virtuous actions will accumulate. Therefore, if one does not realize the view of the union of clarity and emptiness as it is, one will not gain decisive confidence or certainty. Therefore, it is said, "Seek from emptiness." Therefore, the key to spontaneous liberation mentioned above is very important. The way to liberate is as follows: In the continuum of a single individual, there are only three types of thoughts: good thoughts, bad thoughts, and neutral thoughts. Good thoughts are not only difficult to liberate, but also difficult to recognize. For example, when faith and compassion arise, if one grasps the objects of the Three Jewels as truly existent and the subject as self-existent, then faith and so on will appear as truly existent. Compassion is the same. If it is necessary, it must appear or be liberated as an ornament of the realm of non-existence. Or, if thoughts of death and impermanence arise, then the conceptualizations of grasping at the characteristics of birth and death must also be purified into the realm of reality. Or, when pleasant sensations of food, clothing, shelter, and possessions arise, liberation is out of the question. One clings to what appears, and clings to it as one is attached, thereby accumulating karma. It is said that the three bad thoughts—attachment (Tibetan: ཆག༷ས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: rāga, Sanskrit Romanization: raga, Literal Meaning: attachment), aversion (Tibetan: སྡང༷་, Sanskrit Devanagari: dveṣa, Sanskrit Romanization: dvesha, Literal Meaning: aversion), and ignorance (Tibetan: རྨོང༷ས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: moha, Sanskrit Romanization: moha, Literal Meaning: ignorance)—must also be liberated. As for neutral thoughts that are neither beneficial nor harmful, even ordinary people do not put them into practice, and there is no possibility of practicing them. Because all subtle and gross conceptualizations must be liberated, do not boast. Through examining one's own continuum, the key to liberation, in any case, is that the basis of liberation is the union of clarity and emptiness, what is to be liberated is the three types of thoughts: good, bad, and neutral, and liberation is achieved through five ways, etc. Because it is primordial liberation, there is no need to transfer. Because it is self-liberation, there is no antidote. Because it is immediate liberation, it vanishes upon being seen. It is singular liberation.
