The distinctions of the body. First, the meaning of being separated by three-fourths is to be free from the conceptualizations of the three times. The fourth part, the single clear and empty thigle, this must be recognized. Awareness is unconditioned, like mercury not mixed with dust. From the expanse of awareness, no matter how much coarse or fine arises, it is neither beneficial nor harmful, and it becomes clear in its own nature. Mind is ignorance, conditioned, with the nature of arising and ceasing, like a drop of water falling into the earth. Whatever object arises, it is grasped and becomes confused. It is said that consciousness and wisdom must be distinguished by wind. The difference between the alaya and the dharmakaya is that there are two types of alaya. First, the alaya of true meaning is the tathagatagarbha, the uncontaminated dharmadhatu, like an ocean, which is the plan for body and wisdom. Second, the alaya of impure samsara is the contaminated dharma, mainly the mind, the eight aggregates of consciousness, and the fifty mental factors of the retinue. The subtle ones, the eighty conceptualizations (forty conceptualizations of desire, thirty-three conceptualizations of anger, seven conceptualizations of delusion, note), are its plan. The alaya is like a container that accumulates the habitual imprints of previous conceptualizations. It is said that it is the basis for the arising of later conceptualizations. The Omniscient One said, "When a person rests, the consciousness does not conceptualize anything for a moment and remains in an unspecified state, this is the alaya. From this, the object of appearance is not interrupted, it is clear and bright, but there is no grasping, so this state of clarity without conceptualization is the alaya consciousness." From the alaya consciousness, the five sense consciousnesses arise. From this, the conceptual mind arises. From this, the afflicted mind arises. During the period when the conceptual mind and the afflicted mind are not interrupted, the simultaneous existence of the five sense consciousnesses is not obvious. The conceptual mind and the afflicted mind are coarse, the five sense consciousnesses are subtle, and the alaya consciousness is extremely subtle. The alaya consciousness has the aspect of arising and ceasing, the five sense consciousnesses have the aspect of arising and dying, and the consciousness and the afflicted mind have the aspect of grasper and grasped. From the Root Tantra of the Sound Transcendent: "The meditation without distraction is the clarity of the sense gates." Thus, when the five senses are present simultaneously, there is a state of abiding. If the clear aspect does not arise from that state of abiding, then one will be born as an animal. If the clear aspect arises, and the relaxed aspect does not arise, then one will be attached to one's own continuum.

One is bound by the bonds of clinging. The way to loosen them is: sometimes loosen, sometimes tighten. If you alternate this repeatedly, it is said that you will feel the loosening in about seven or eight days. Once a sign of loosening appears, and there is a sign of arising, you must be liberated without any subsequent thoughts. If you are not liberated, you will fall into the desire realm, and if you do not have these conditions, there are three places to fall. If you are attached to the three—bliss, clarity, and non-thought—on top of mind consciousness, you will fall into the three realms. If you fall from eye consciousness among the five gates, you will be reborn in the form realm. It is said that if you can skillfully maintain these seven places of falling equally through the five gates, you will cut off the places of falling. Furthermore, the mind consciousness with thoughts performs two types of grasping: external grasping and internal grasping. External grasping is cutting off the past, welcoming the future, and grasping the characteristics of the present, both external and internal. It grasps the characteristics of objects such as form and sound. Internal grasping is that during meditative equipoise, the mind consciousness, as the subject, grasps the object of bliss as blissful, grasps clarity as clear, and grasps non-thought as emptiness. If afflictive mind functions well during a session of meditative equipoise, desire for happiness arises. When dullness and excitement arise, aversion and anger arise. When any of the three—bliss, clarity, and non-thought—arise, the mind consciousness, as the subject, grasps and clings to that object, and through the power of repeated habituation, the object and subject merge inseparably, remaining in a state of non-thought. It is said that the awareness that is unmixed with the thoughts of the three times, clear and empty, and unfabricated, which arises there, is called "rigpa." Since it is the source and liberation of all thoughts, it is the primordially pure ground rigpa or dharmakaya. The way to cultivate it through subsequent practice is through four aspects: view, meditation, conduct, and result. First, the view of recognizing one's own nature is: if this view of the nature of freedom from elaboration is experienced through the path of meditation, it will have wisdom-jnana, compassionate-karuna, and the power to protect, etc. Having unobstructed knowledge is the characteristic of being all-knowing and all-seeing. Realizing the view of the union of wisdom and emptiness, which is free from all extremes of elaboration and has unobstructed self-radiance, one can cut off past thoughts and allow what arises in the space between the non-arising of future thoughts to appear.
