That which is held to is also called self-grasping. It is also called innate self-grasping. Therefore, this grasping of self is the root of samsara, the source of suffering, and an obstacle on the path to enlightenment, like recognizing a thief. Second, searching for flaws: Now, if there is a "I" that is not your body, speech, and mind, then upon examination, it does not exist. The reason for saying "I" is that it refers to the body, speech, and mind, and these three are not separate, but are held as a single truth, so if you think that way, then your body is something seen by the eyes, and your speech is something heard by the ears, therefore your mind must manifest shapes, colors, etc., which is a fault. If speech and mind are one, then the mind must be felt, which is a fault. If body, speech, and mind are one, then body and speech should not be seen and heard, which is a fault. If they are many, then you must be many, which is a fault. Why? Because, taking one example of the form aggregate among your five aggregates, there are twenty-one thousand hairs, twenty nails, thirty-two teeth, three hundred and four bone fragments, twelve internal organs, and muscles, skin, blood, serum, bones, marrow, brain, spinal cord, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, etc., there must be a number, which is a fault. When all of these are broken down into indivisible particles, you must have that many numbers, which is not acceptable. Taking the example of speech, it is unreasonable because it requires the collection of many factors such as the palate, lips, tongue, throat, and the movement of air. Because many thoughts arise in the mind, you must have that many numbers, which is a fault. Like that, when examining and analyzing, when the body is purified into indivisible particles, the body does not exist at all, so it is like appearance and emptiness, like the moon in water; speech does not exist at all, so it is like traceless self-extinction, sound and emptiness, like an echo in a valley; the mind does not exist at all, so it is like thoughts self-extinguishing without trace, like the tracks of birds in the sky. In ultimate truth, self-nature is not established, but in conventional appearance, it appears as many. Therefore, because there are many, it prevents grasping the whole as one truth. Because it is a compounded phenomenon arising from the aggregation of many aggregates, it is momentary, so it prevents grasping at permanence. This is the recognition of the flaw of being neither one nor different.

It is determined. Third, examining the three origins, abodes, and destinations: clinging to "I" where there is no "I," clinging to self where there is no self-nature, where did this first arise from? Where does it abide in the middle? Where does it ultimately go? One must examine the producer, the dweller, the goer, and the six doors of object and subject. That is, the outer appearance is the vessel-world, the middle is the moving sentient beings, and the inner is the self, body, aggregates, sense bases, etc. Where did they arise from, where do they abide, and where do they go? When examining and contemplating, since there is no cause for the initial arising, the cause of birth is emptiness. Since there is no agent dwelling in the middle, the nature of the agent itself is emptiness. Since there is no characteristic of the ultimate going, the cessation itself is emptiness in nature. If one understands such key points well, it is like cutting the root of a tree, and all the leaves will naturally wither. The Great Perfection master said: When examining one and many, it is the determination of the self of the person. When examining the three origins, abodes, and destinations, it is the determination of the self of phenomena. (This text should not be trusted lightly, but should be examined and contemplated. Note.) All inner and outer phenomena of vessel and essence, except for what is imputed by the mind, there is not even a particle that is established from its own side. The outer vessel-world, the inner sentient beings, and the middle arrangements of desirable qualities, all of these are merely imputed by the mind. Examine whether they are truly established, and when it is determined that they are unreal, illusory, and dreamlike, one should rest in that certainty. At that time, which is higher, the view of the Madhyamaka-Prasaṅgika or the view of the Great Perfection's three origins, abodes, and destinations? The view of the three origins, abodes, and destinations is higher. The Madhyamaka requires a certainty like a tightly twisted wire. In the Great Perfection's three origins, abodes, and destinations, the unobstructed arising from the luminosity of the essence is necessary; that is the distinguishing characteristic spoken of from the basis of the distinguished object. The view of the three origins, abodes, and destinations is the union of appearance and emptiness. In the state of appearing, it is emptiness; in the state of emptiness, it is appearance. The union of appearance and emptiness is like the moon in water. The fourfold emptiness is: Form is emptiness. Emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form. Form is not other than emptiness. Thus it is said. In the main part of introducing the nature of awareness, the difference between mind and awareness, the difference between consciousness and wisdom, the all-ground consciousness, dharma.
