"May all beings be happy. Reaching the realm of Dharma, how wonderful!" Thus it was said. Such a key instruction has two aspects: first, practice, and second, application. First, the practice: Now, having received the instructions on transference of consciousness (phowa), practice it repeatedly until signs appear. Also, now, when all parts of one's body, such as the channels, energies, and bindus, have not deteriorated, it is somewhat difficult to actually perform phowa based on it during the prime of life. However, when the time of death approaches or when one is very old and frail, it is easier to perform phowa. For example, fruits and berries on a tree are difficult to pick in the summer when they are in their prime, but in the autumn, when they are ripe and about to fall, they fall even with the slightest touch of a garment. Then, the application is: when signs of death appear to oneself, knowing that it is irreversible, and when the stages of dissolution and so on occur, then it should be done; otherwise, it is not permissible. As it is said in the tantra: "When the time comes, perform phowa; before the time, it will kill the deities." Thus it is said. Whether it is during practice or application, it is the same. The actual meditation sequence of the phowa instruction is: sit comfortably in the vajra posture, etc., and straighten the body. From the preliminary Guru Remote Invocation onwards, complete the entire Guru Yoga, including the stages of dissolution. Then, the main visualization is: this place where one is sitting instantly transforms into the center of the Western Pure Land of Sukhavati, complete with all its ornaments and arrangements fully manifest. One's own basic body aggregates instantly transform into a lotus and sun cushion, with the essence being the dakini Yeshe Tsogyal, appearing as Vajrayogini, with a red-colored body, one face, and two arms. The two legs are in a dancing posture, standing together. The face has a slightly peaceful and slightly wrathful expression, with three eyes gazing upwards into the sky. The right hand shakes a skull drum (damaru) in the sky, awakening from the sleep of ignorance and delusion. The left hand holds a curved knife (kartrika) that cuts the three poisons from the root, resting on the hip. The body is naked, adorned with bone ornaments and garlands of flowers. Appearing but without inherent existence, it appears like a red tent is pitched, which is the emptiness of the outer body. In the center of that body, the central channel is filled with blood and water.

Like a pillar erected in an empty room, unstained by yellow. Representing the unchanging Dharmakaya, it is blue like a blue husk. To indicate the thinning of the obscuration of habitual tendencies, it is as thin as a lotus petal. To indicate the dispelling of the darkness of ignorance, it is as clear as a sesame oil lamp. To prevent straying into inferior paths and wrong paths, it is straight like a supple water plant. Possessing these four characteristics. To represent the path to higher realms and liberation, the upper end is wide open at the Brahma aperture at the crown of the head, like an upturned broad-mouthed vessel. To represent the closing of the doors of samsara and the lower realms, the lower end is closed and constricted at the root channel, four fingers below the navel. Such clarity is the emptiness of the inner channel. Then, in the center of that central channel, at the heart, visualize a knot like a blocked section of bamboo. Above that, on top of a greenish-blue drop of wind-energy, which is in a state of trembling and flickering, is one's own mind, the essence of consciousness, the red letter Sanskrit Romanization: hrīḥ, Literal Chinese meaning: Great Compassion), with a long form, dot, and hook, trembling slightly like a flag struck by the wind; this is the basis of awareness and mind. Then, in the sky about a cubit above one's crown, on a precious throne supported by eight great peacocks, on top of a triple seat of various lotuses, sun, and moon. Its essence is the embodiment of all Buddhas of the three times, the incomparable treasure of compassion, the glorious root guru. Its form is the Bhagavan Buddha, the Protector Amitabha, whose body is red like a mountain of ruby, embraced by a million suns. One face, two hands in meditative equipoise, holding a begging bowl filled with the nectar of immortal wisdom, is the supreme emanation, possessing the conduct of celibacy. Wearing the three Dharma robes, with a crown protuberance on the head and a wheel on the feet, adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs of excellence. Radiating boundless light and rays of light, such a one is clearly visualized. To his right is the embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas, the noble Avalokiteśvara, whose body is white. One face, four arms, the first two hands folded in prayer at the heart, the lower right hand holding a white crystal rosary, the lower left hand holding the stem of a white lotus...
