Giving up effort upon seeing difficulties, thinking that success is definitely impossible, is the laziness of sloth. Discouragement, thinking that someone like me cannot do it, is the laziness of self-deprecation. Thus it was said. Fifth, the Perfection of Meditation is divided into two. First, if one does not abandon all busyness and distractions and rely on a solitary place, meditation cannot arise in the mindstream. Geshe Potowa said: "Those who like crowds and have many activities will not succeed in virtuous practice. Among them, meditation will not succeed." Also, Gonpa said: "The root of meditation lies in relying on solitary places." The Omniscient Great One said: "As long as the mind has not gained stability, external objects will greatly deceive you. Therefore, dwell joyfully in a solitary forest." In the Solitary Sayings it says: "As long as the body is not carried away by four corpse-bearers, therefore, strive towards the monastery and practice peaceful samadhi." Jowo Rinpoche said: "Life has been wasted in distraction, now is the time to practice equipoise." Second, the actual meditation is, as the Omniscient Dharma King said: "There, sitting cross-legged on a cushion, with one-pointed mind, remain unwavering in equipoise. Practice the meditation of the childish practitioner, the discernment of meaning, and the noble meditation of the Tathagata." Also, in the Lankavatara Sutra it says: "There is the meditation of the childish practitioner, the meditation of discerning meaning, and the meditation of the Tathagata's goodness." As it is said, there are three types: the meditation of the childish practitioner, the meditation of discerning meaning, and the meditation of the Tathagata's goodness. Among them, if one clings to the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, and specifically pursues it, meditating with the stain of clinging to experience, it is called the meditation of the childish practitioner. If one is free from clinging to experience and has not tasted the flavor of meditation, but clings to the side of the antidote to emptiness, it is called the meditation of discerning meaning. If one is free from the thought of the antidote to emptiness and abides in the samadhi of the non-conceptual nature of reality, this is said to be the meditation of the Tathagata's goodness. The Omniscient Dharma King said: "The samadhi of the mindstream that has not entered the path, and the formless meditations, are called the meditation of the childish practitioner. The path

Entering the samadhi of the combined aggregation becomes the path to liberation, and because it can completely distinguish meanings, it is called the samadhi of completely distinguishing meanings. The samadhis of the noble ones from the first ground upwards are called the uncontaminated or Tathagata's virtuous samadhi. Thus it is said. The Bodhisattva Asanga said: Without samadhi, one cannot see the nature of reality, therefore meditate on the samadhi without concepts or signs. Also, Kharagpa said: The conceptualization of a beginner has clarity, but no stability. Do not stir up the wind of conceptualization, but tie it with the rope of mindfulness! Thus it is said. The sixth is Prajnaparamita, in the Treasury of Precious Qualities it says: From hearing, thinking, and meditating, the three wisdoms perfectly accomplish vipassana, destroying the multitude of afflictions, knowing phenomena and entities, passing from the city of existence into the state of no sorrow. As it is said, the wisdom of hearing, the wisdom of thinking, and the wisdom of meditating are the three. The Omniscient One said: Thus, knowing the nature or reality of all phenomena as they are is hearing. Also, after ascertaining through thinking, liberating from the ocean of existence through meditation is considered the nature of wisdom. It is also said that the wisdom of being skilled in the five sciences is the wisdom of understanding conventional truth, the wisdom of measuring the meaning of selflessness from the perspective of general characteristics or direct perception is the wisdom of ultimate truth, and knowing how sentient beings accomplish the meaning of this life and the next without fault is the wisdom of knowing how to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings. There are also the samadhi uncontaminated transcendental wisdom, the subsequent pure worldly wisdom, and so on, with many distinctions. Also, wisdom is called vipassana because it is far superior to other paramitas such as generosity. The Bodhisattva Asanga said: Without wisdom, the five perfections cannot attain perfect enlightenment, therefore meditating on wisdom that possesses skillful means and does not conceptualize the three spheres is the practice of a Bodhisattva. As it is said, especially if there is no wisdom that realizes selflessness, then the five perfections such as generosity are like being without eyes. In the Collected Sutras it says:
