This should be done. Thus it is said. Third, the Paramita of Patience: From "Resting the Mind," it says, "To various sufferings of external and internal harm, not to think of dislike and to think of the Dharma of compassion, also to cultivate the three kinds of forbearance without object." As it is said. There are three types of patience: patience that endures the wrongdoings of others, patience that endures hardship for the sake of the Dharma, and patience that does not fear the profound meaning. Among them, the patience that endures the wrongdoings of others is: when others directly beat, rob, or speak ill of oneself, or speak unfavorably behind one's back, one should not be angry or wrathful, but rather generate love and compassion and benefit them. As the great Bodhisattva Shantideva said: If compassion is not born in abundance, what is the use of being angry? Thus it is said. If one becomes angry and retaliates, the Vinaya says: The so-called anger destroys the roots of virtue accumulated over hundreds of thousands of kalpas. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: A thousand kalpas of generosity, and offerings to the Sugatas, all virtuous deeds, are destroyed by a single act of anger. There is no sin like hatred, no austerity like patience. Therefore, one should diligently cultivate patience in various ways. Thus it is said. The Omniscient Great One said: There is no sin like hatred, and there is no austerity or merit equal to patience. Therefore, one should diligently cultivate patience in various ways and strive to extinguish the great fire of anger. Thus it is said. The noble Asanga said: Subduing one's own stubborn mind is the ultimate of a hero, and subduing the enemy of anger is the ultimate of victory. Thus it is said. The patience of enduring hardship for the sake of the Dharma is: for the sake of practicing the sacred Dharma, one does not mind all the hardships of heat and cold, and one endures suffering, which is the patience of not disliking. The patience of not being afraid of the profound meaning is: the reality of profound emptiness, especially the reality of the Great Perfection of self-nature, the key point of being free from effort, the twelve vajra laughs that transcend good, evil, cause, and effect, and when hearing the eight great words of wonder, one does not fear them and endures them, and then understands their meaning without error.

One should strive for the means of obtaining (dhyana) concentration. Fourth, the perfection of diligence: The Omniscient Dharma King said: "To whom the nature of diligence is joyful in virtue, to him virtuous dharmas gather like clouds. Like bees in a fragrant lotus grove." Classified, there is the armor-like diligence that accomplishes virtue and destroys the four maras, the applying diligence that accomplishes the five paths and ten bhumis, and the diligence of benefiting sentient beings that accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others. As it is said, entering into virtuous places with joy is diligence. Classified, there is the armor-like diligence of not being discouraged or the respectful applying diligence, the constant applying diligence of not interrupting practice, and the diligence of not being satisfied with benefiting sentient beings and perfecting the Buddha's Dharma. There are many distinctions such as these three classifications. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva Asanga said: "Even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who practice only for their own benefit, see them striving as if their heads were on fire. For the benefit of all beings, initiating diligence with the source of merit is the practice of a Bodhisattva." The Sutra says: "Enlightenment abides in diligence, it does not abide in non-diligence. Diligence gathers all virtues, diligence increases all qualities." The fault of not initiating diligence is: In the Sutra of Mindfulness it says: "The root of all afflictions is laziness; whoever has laziness, has no dharmas." The Omniscient Jigme Lingpa said: "For a person without diligence, wisdom, power, and strength cannot protect him, just as a ship has a captain but is entangled by weeds." As it is said, without diligence, one will be controlled by laziness and have no time to practice the Dharma. The Great Omniscient One said: "What is contrary to this (diligence) is the three kinds of laziness: attachment to evil deeds, laziness, and self-deprecation. It cannot accomplish good deeds, it is the basis for arising all evils, it will cause perfection to decline and generate decay." And, being distracted by activities such as trade, agriculture, writing, and arithmetic that hinder the true Dharma is the laziness of being attached to evil deeds.
