Lying is not allowed! Those who know nothing about the Dharma are blinded by "I" and "truth." Because they are not integrated into one school, they insist on the position of the school. Without having generated view and meditation in their own minds, they judge others. Sitting on their own eight worldly thoughts, they expect others to be liberated. Without their own experience, they introduce it to others. They talk about the Dharma, but their hearts crave pleasure. Experience is wishful thinking, behavior is pretense, and the result is merit. They say that those who live only for this life are just shadows of Buddhists. When I asked reason to dispel the doubts of hearing, the saint said: You cannot be satisfied without drinking water. Just hearing the virtues of a gem does not fulfill desires. Just knowing the Dharma does not arise in the mind. You must drink water, you must get the gem, you must practice like the Dharma. When I asked a practitioner how to practice after just knowing the Dharma, he said: Merit is not in knowing the Dharma, but in the practitioner. If you practice from the bottom of your heart, there is nothing you do not know. At the very least, how can you not know how to recite the six-syllable mantra? If you generate certainty, then one piece of advice is enough to practice. Just hearing a lot does not necessarily generate view and meditation in the mind. All the wise men said that there seems to be view and meditation, and when I asked about this, the saint said: This is just a superficial phenomenon, and there is no experience in the mind. A hungry person can count the wealth of the rich, but he cannot enjoy it himself. If there is no experience in the mind, there will be no such behavior. I asked, if there is experience in the mind, what kind of behavior will there be? The saint said: If view and meditation arise in the mind, then delusion will be liberated on the basis, but he still does not give up his position. If there is no self-grasping, the eight worldly thoughts will disappear like a wall collapsing, but he still tries to become great in every way. If one is free from the eight worldly thoughts, the sounds of praise and criticism will disappear like echoes in a valley, but he is still looking in the scattered ashes. If you know that the sound is an echo in the valley, there will be no false greatness, but he is still not free from false greatness. I asked, then are the Panditas (wise men) somewhat lacking? He said that there are many shortcomings, not just those. This is because ordinary people do not understand the Dharma. The Panditas understand the essence of the Dharma, know how to practice, and are able to experience it, but they do not practice, which is the shortcoming.

When asked for instructions, the holy one said: "Kunga, there is no end to people like that. They do not seek Dharma or future lives, but they cannot recognize happiness in this very life. Death need not be specifically meditated upon. Everyone knows for sure that they will die, but they are not afraid. The suffering of the lower realms is not unheard of. They see it directly, yet they are not afraid. Everyone understands that they are living on the edge of their household, but they cannot live alone. They see that accumulated possessions are left behind, yet they cannot untie the knot of miserliness. They are not satisfied with caring for close relatives and grandchildren, and they cannot let go of attachment. They do not intend to practice Dharma from the depths of their hearts, and where is the law that will come? Their lives are wasted on trivial matters. Everyone goes to death in the same way." Kunga asked the holy one: "What should be done with those who stare blankly like the blind?" The holy one said: "Everyone is blind, but we ourselves should not be blind. First, we must observe. After observing, we must see. After seeing, we must understand. After understanding, we must practice. After practicing, we will finally complete it." Holy one, yesterday a monk said: "He wants to build a tall building without laying the foundation, he wants to build a tall building without a lower structure, he has not even generated a moment of the views of the lower vehicle, he does not keep even one vow, yet he wants to give introductions to the definitive meaning of secret mantra. This is very difficult." I felt uneasy about this. The holy one said: "If you are diligent, you can obtain the jewel from the depths of the ocean; if you are lazy, you will even abandon the farming of your own fields. That is indeed true. You should not be deceived by such people. A frog in a well cannot imagine the ocean outside, so it needs to see the ocean outside. That monk is one who likes to climb upwards. When he hears profound teachings, he is amazed and astonished. Therefore, the Teacher also taught many vehicles for the sake of taming beings of different capacities. If beings did not have different capacities, the Teacher would have been satisfied with teaching only one Dharma." Kunga asked: "Then shouldn't those who like to climb upwards first practice the lower vehicle?" The holy one said: "What do you mean by this? When you reach the top floor, the function of the ladder is complete, but the top of the palace cannot be without a foundation. This human body of this time is not entering the path alone, but many accumulations and purifications have gone before."
