While acting, the fire of wisdom blazed naturally, and the water of nectar boiled naturally, without relying on actions like ordinary people. In short, no matter how you measure it, he possessed inconceivable liberation that was extraordinary and amazing. The assembled retinue also exceeded counting, and for them, the tradition of instructions was sown in various ways according to their individual capacities and suitability. Among the four great yogi heart-sons, to Lama Phyar chen, he introduced the two Prajñāpāramitā, with and without meditation, and cut off elaboration with the three: bka' chol lu, mdo sbyor, and don bsdebs. To Phyar chung, he introduced mantra and Prajñāpāramitā as inseparable, and placed him on the path of the four recitations and accomplishments. Saying that Vajrakrodha (वज्रक्रोध, vajrakrodha, the wrathful vajra) was the path of blessing, he had him constantly pray, and gave the teachings of bka' bsdus pa'i skor, which included the introduction and instructions of the Heart Sutra. To Bodhisattva Kun dga', he said that he was a gradual person, and gave him mind training, guiding him onto the path of asceticism, placing him in the rkyang khug lam lnga'i bsdus pa. To Lama Rdzong pa, he said that he was an instant person, and introduced him to the Great Seal, dbang gcig ma, placing him on that path. To Lama rGya sgom, he gave the instruction of recognizing awareness, placing him on the path of stainlessness. To Lama lCag, he gave the instruction of the four empowerments as the path, liberating through symbols, and placed him on the path of the four empowerments as antidotes. To dBus pa sGro ston, based on the meaning of the essence and the Abhisamaya, he guided him on the two paths of gradual and instant, and to cut off their continuation, he spoke the three cycles of meaning transmission. To Lama Ye gzi 'bar, relying on the mirror of the mind free from concepts, he introduced the meaning of the Great Seal. To Zha ma lCam sring, relying on the Dohā teachings, he introduced the two ways of gradual and instant. To heart-son Jo mo rGya sgom ma, he introduced the profound instruction of the naked seeing of awareness, and so on. He gave various different instructions to the fortunate disciples, but most of them were personally experienced and liberated, and not widely known. The holy one himself, from the Fire Ox year (1157) to the Fire Bird year (1177), resided in Dingri (present-day Dingri County, Tibet) for twenty-one years, benefiting various peoples of different ethnicities, placing them on the path of practice, and maturing them.

He also liberated them. Sometimes, even without empowerment, he gave many profound instructions upon meeting them. Kunga asked Dampa, "Dampa, venerable one, is it permissible to impart the essence of mantra even without empowerment and blessings?" Dampa replied, "On an untamed path, a chariot cannot travel. In a crooked ditch, water cannot flow. In murky water, reflections do not appear. An unbaked clay pot cannot bear weight. If the mindstream is impure, virtues will not arise. Do you think that Achara (Sanskrit teacher) imparts instructions haphazardly? I know how to observe the dispositions of beings, so I impart instructions that are suitable to their dispositions. There are also many who have already tamed their mindstreams through the blessings of past lives. There are also many beginners whose mindstreams have not yet matured. Seeing Achara and receiving empowerment are simultaneous. When a garuda soars into the sky, a sparrow cannot compete with it. We first bathe in the water of blessings, and then we can drink the nectar of instructions," he said. So! Once, a pandita came to Dampa to beg for gold, and he kept speaking many terms of philosophical tenets. Dampa said, "There is a pandita who knows how to transform emptiness into form. How wonderful!" He did not understand that. Kunga asked separately, "Dampa, venerable one, what does it mean to know how to transform emptiness into form?" Dampa replied, "The Buddha's intention is impartial, but he holds many sectarian views. The Buddha's precious teachings only spoke of one ultimate intention. Because he does not understand this one, he speaks of many, and the many obscure the one." Dampa also said, "Even if one knows many teachings, if it does not benefit the liberation of one's own mindstream, thinking about this makes me want to dance." Kunga asked, "Does learning many teachings benefit the liberation of one's own mindstream?" Dampa replied, "If being learned benefited the liberation of one's own mindstream, then panditas would not wander in samsara." Kunga asked, "What is the key point that being learned does not benefit the liberation of one's own mindstream?" Dampa replied, "Wearing worldly armor, transcendent Dharma cannot arise in the mindstream. In the bladder of pride, the water of virtue does not accumulate. Without the grasp of certainty, one cannot drink the nectar of experience. Without the depth of realization,
