In the 'Supreme Bliss Commentary,' it says, 'First seeing smoke, know that it is not a mirage.' One should know this through one's own experience.' Here, presenting the mirage as the first sign is considered to have a deeper meaning. In the 'Praise of Names,' the yoga of the daytime is discussed, as it is said: 'Arising from the sky, self-born, wisdom-gnosis great fire.' This shows the form of blazing. 'Great light manifests, the light of wisdom is like a lamp.' This refers to the moon. 'The lamp of beings, the lamp of wisdom.' This refers to the sun. Rahu (eclipse demon) of the sun and moon appear in order. 'Great splendor, clear light,' this refers to lightning. 'Supreme mantra lord, king of vidya-mantras.' This shows the form of bindu (essential drop). Then, 'King of secret mantras, accomplishing great benefit.' This shows the image of all forms, as said by the noble Avalokiteshvara. Therefore, the yogi practicing the gathering stages, the beginner seeing signs such as smoke in samadhi, this is seen by the flesh eye arising from meditation. In the 'Immaculate Light,' it is said, 'Here, the beginner yogi, without clairvoyance, sees various things with the flesh eye.' This is also considered to be direct perception in yoga. The 'Vajra Essence' says, 'What is the direct perception of a yogi? It is self-knowing and self-realizing. The wisdom of the completion stage is the supreme means of accomplishing Buddha activity.' This itself has five different forms, in the beginning, middle, and end, they are the five eyes that protect the Dharma. First is the flesh eye, then the divine eye, then the Buddha eye, the wisdom eye, and then the fifth, the gnosis eye. The yogi who is a beginner, first becomes the flesh eye.' Therefore, the mind that sees emptiness forms through gathering is valid direct perception. Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani, Vajra Essence, Naropa, and others have said this, so one should believe it. The way a yogi sees various emptiness forms when abiding single-pointedly in non-conceptual samadhi is explained in detail in the commentary on 'Essential Instructions on Empowerment' by Naropa, who quotes many accomplished masters. Among them, Sarahapa says, 'What is the use of saying much? This alone is the measure of Dharma. When the eye is half-open and looking upwards, know it by the stability of what is seen. Wonderful center of the sky appears, Bhusuku, look at the beautiful form of emptiness, Bhusuku. Unparalleled flowers bloom, Bhusuku.'

A precious and priceless flower blooms, this flower is of various colors. This flower blooms in the emptiness monastery. (Naropa) quoted many scriptures, therefore, In order to pursue the meaning of the Buddha, one should undoubtedly practice the path of smoke and so on. Thus it was said. This hand-seal concentration is also mentioned in the Mother of the Victorious Ones (Prajnaparamita), as follows: Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to the venerable Subhuti: 'Venerable Subhuti, who here practices yoga on the Prajnaparamita?' Subhuti said: 'Kauśika, whoever practices yoga on space, that is practicing yoga on the Prajnaparamita.' Kauśika, whoever practices yoga on that which is without concealment, that is what one should think of learning the Prajnaparamita.' Thus it was said. Practicing yoga on space is the yoga of the night, and practicing yoga on that which is without concealment is the yoga of the day, as spoken by the holy Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani, and the great seal accomplished master, the venerable Naropa.
