It should be done like that. Having said that, one should also speak and contemplate its meaning. Like this, in these circumstances, in general, it is to all sentient beings, especially to all harm-doers, that one should cultivate extremely. After that, the faults of samsara, and desires are few and have many faults, and the benefits of solitude, and the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, and the impermanence of compounded things, and the infallibility of karma and its results, etc., should be repeatedly contemplated, and cultivated in detail by various methods. During the session, one should temporarily cultivate these diligently. During breaks between sessions, offerings, and taking refuge, generating the mind of enlightenment, and reading scriptures, and prostrations and circumambulations, etc., should be done diligently for all kinds of activities. How is it done? When these mental activities become slightly familiar, then enter the main practice. That is, in front, offer the image of Akshobhya Buddha, or the image of the Buddhas like our teacher, the Blessed One. Place something in front that is not too expensive, such as gold, and fix your eyes on it, focusing your mind without distraction. After getting used to this, look at the tip of your nose, and visualize the image of the Buddhas in front, focusing your mind on it without distraction. After getting used to this, settle the mind on the mind, and cultivate with one-pointed concentration. At that time, if you do not notice that the mind is distracted and slightly wavering, then again and again, cultivate again. When it abides, continue from moment to moment. Then, when it is slightly distracted again, if you like to cultivate, or if you do not like to observe, whichever of sinking or excitement, do not be controlled by conceptual thoughts, let go of the thought of settling the mind, relax and settle with one-pointed concentration. If you do not like it, or if you settle and the later time is shorter and less clear than the former, and the mind is tired and sad, then while remembering the benefits and faults of samsara and nirvana, and being at home and in solitude, and afflictions and abiding, sit for a while, and do as it is said, cultivate and make the sessions short and numerous. Also, although the mind is not distracted, many conceptual thoughts like bubbles disturb the mind. When conceptual thoughts arise, do not focus on that itself at all, but abide. Like that, apply as much as arises. How much effort like that

Then, the mind occasionally wanders from its dwelling place. That is to say, the mind deviates from the state of abiding. After that, if one remembers the enjoyment of sensual pleasures in the past, thinks about sensual pleasures, or is preoccupied with the affairs of this life, one should remember the faults of sensual pleasures, the suffering of samsara, and the impermanence of life, not knowing when one will die. One should dispel the arrogance of people in this life by remembering how it is. If conceptual thoughts arise, desire arises from delusion, and from desire turns into evil. Sentient beings wander everywhere, and desire always arises from delusion. One should remember the faults of conceptual thoughts, which are the cause of distraction. If dislike for abiding arises, one should subdue it by remembering the peaceful fruit and the merits of abiding. One should also subdue it by various methods mentioned above, such as using joy if there is sinking, and contemplating impermanence if there is agitation. Furthermore, one should dispel attachment by contemplating ugliness, hatred by contemplating loving-kindness, and ignorance by contemplating selflessness, thereby abiding. After becoming accustomed to this, if one abides by slightly restraining, the opportunity for agitation and sinking will not arise because of abiding. If one does not restrain, such an occurrence is called the door of samadhi. After becoming accustomed to this, the mind will abide effortlessly, and at that time, one should relax the restraining mind and abide loosely, which is quiescence. After becoming accustomed to this for a long time, one should cultivate vipassana. That is, one should first use one's own body as the object of focus, relax, let go, and in the state of abiding, repeatedly contemplate the body and mind, and that these aggregates of mine are only mind. After becoming accustomed to this, one should repeatedly contemplate that these are like echoes in a valley, merely arising from conditions, and are empty apart from that. After becoming accustomed to this, one should especially cultivate all appearances, especially those parts that are strongly attached to reality. This is cultivating vipassana after quiescence has been accomplished, so at first, vipassana is mostly quiescence for some time. Afterwards, quiescence becomes less and vipassana becomes more, but if the power of vipassana is too strong and rough, one should cultivate more quiescence, so that it becomes balanced. By repeatedly practicing entering and exiting in this way, those with sharp faculties will become equal in wisdom and abiding mind after abandoning extremes. Those with dull faculties will not focus on that understanding of emptiness.
