Okay. Therefore, there is no place to rejoice in the arising of the five abisambodhis. Generally, even for the great noble ones whose afflictions are completely exhausted, since the imprints of the four states mentioned above are not exhausted, conduct and proximate causes are necessary; they are both necessary and capable. The eighteenth question is: "Because it is a body of dependent origination, it is in accordance with the five wisdoms." Regarding this, Spowa Khangpa said that the body colors and hand gestures of the five families of the Yoga Tantra are said to purify the five aggregates that are to be purified. If that is the case, can the generation stage also be established in the Yoga Tantra? Or else, below the Yoga Tantra, there is no mention of appearance as deities. How should one understand the contradiction between saying and not saying? In response to this, it is certain that below the Yoga Tantra, there is no method of purification, purifier, or means of purification that corresponds to the order of birth and death, through meditating on the object of deity yoga. Because of the absence of these, even if there is only a practice that corresponds to the result of purification, it will not become a true generation stage. Therefore, if one practices the purification of the five aggregates as a symbol similar to the pure recollection of the Unsurpassed, then it will not be contradictory if there is a basis. Because the five families are symbols of the five wisdoms, this is also accepted here. Moreover, it is repeatedly taught in this Yoga that the four wisdoms are the transformation of the eight consciousnesses. However, regarding the statement "appearance as deities," if, as many later people believe, it is thought that after the faults and stains on this present form aggregate are purified, the lineage of this form aggregate will become Vairochana, etc., that is not reasonable even for the Unsurpassed. Moreover, here it is not said to contemplate all appearances as deities, so please consider that as well. Although it is said that the natures of the two purities, etc., which are included in one's own continuum, are the four Buddha families when the eight consciousnesses, etc., are purified through practicing the path, it is not clearly stated in this tantra that the four families are inherently present in the beginning when there are stains. Therefore, the concept of contemplating all appearances as deity bodies does not arise. The nineteenth question is: Also, to prove that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize emptiness, the scriptures are quoted, saying, "How by the distinctions of knots..." etc. If that is the case, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the selflessness of phenomena.

It seems necessary to understand this. Even so, it's acceptable. If the scriptures state it that way, according to the view of the Ornament of the Sutras, it seems that the Hearers and Solitary Realizers would fall into the fault of realizing the absence of self of phenomena. This is what is to be said: The author of the Distinguishing the Three Vows greatly valued the view of the master Chandrakirti, so he might think that Hearers and Solitary Realizers realize the absence of self of phenomena. However, this is not certain in itself. Hearers and Solitary Realizers also have the samadhi of the three doors of liberation, and many categories of Dharma on emptiness, such as the Great Sutra of Emptiness, also appear in the Lesser Vehicle. However, most of the direct teachings of these are: things arise from the interdependence of various causes and conditions, so they are empty of agents, etc.; and that coarse and permanent appearances are merely illusions. Whatever phenomenon appears, it only appears as empty of the entity of self and mine. Even just realizing that much, it is permissible to apply the term "realizing emptiness," just as realizing the absence of self of a person, one obtains the term "realizing the absence of self." However, in this case, because of being without skillful means, even if one only realizes emptiness, one will not attain the Buddha who knows all knowable things. If one does not attain all qualities, it is not enough to be liberated in mind alone, because one will fall into the Lesser Vehicle. Keeping this in mind, he cites many scriptural passages such as the Ornament of Clear Realization. However, the scriptural passage of the Ornament of Clear Realization is only about the wisdom of entering the state of reality, and Hearers also have the complete three trainings. Just by that, the path of the Great Vehicle will not be completed. Similarly, by other scriptural passages, it is proven that wisdom is not clear and qualities are not complete, etc. Although they are the same in realizing emptiness, there is a great difference in the way wisdom realizes it. It seems that the scriptural passage of the Ornament of the Sutras was cited to prove this point, and not to prove the realization of emptiness. Therefore, according to the view of the Ornament of the Sutras, it will not lead to the fault that Lesser Vehicle practitioners must admit to realizing the two absences of self. Even if the sphere of activity of wisdom seems to be only emptiness, it will not become so. As it is said: Those liberated from phenomena and self, are similar in general, but different in kind.
