was cut off. The Teacher prophesied that Devadatta could not be saved. It is also said that he thought there was no afterlife, so he widely proclaimed the five ascetic practices to his disciples. When the Thus-Gone-One manifested the appearance of being ill, the young attendant began to offer medicinal ghee with an iron arrow, and the Buddha said: Jivaka, is the wonder greater, or the offering greater? Is the rarity greater? Greater. Do you know? I know. Don't you know? I don't know. The Teacher thought in this way and spoke these words, and Jivaka understood, from the timely enjoyment of the best cow comes nectar, this is more wonderful than the production of medicinal ghee through purification! The appearance of the Buddha and the preaching of the Dharma are more rare than the establishment of the Sangha. If there is birth, then one knows there is death. But the dead are not necessarily born. Then, Jivaka thought: The Blessed One has a vajra body, and the body is so large that it needs so much. So he offered thirty-two taels of medicinal ghee, and the rest was distributed to the Sangha, and Devadatta also said that he needed as much as the Teacher. The Buddha said: The Buddha has a vajra body, but you cannot bear so much. He said: If I also have a vajra body, why can't I bear it? So he drank thirty-two taels of medicinal ghee. The next day, when offering thin porridge to the Teacher, he came to compete again. Devadatta drank the porridge while the medicinal ghee was undigested, causing indigestion, bloating, and severe pain, unable to sleep day and night, tossing and turning. Ananda reported to the Buddha: The Blessed One is staying in the cave of Vulture Peak Mountain, stretching out his hand and placing it on Devadatta's head, and speaking the truth, the illness was immediately cured. He recognized the Buddha's hand and said: Gautama's mastery of medicine is good, but can this person live? There, even those who were very attached to Devadatta thought that the Buddha was full of love and were amazed. The monks said: You were healed by the Teacher. Devadatta said: Gautama knows the illusion of control, so he controls the world. I just digested the medicinal ghee and the illness was cured, but what does he have to say to me? Later, the Shakyas persuaded Devadatta to repent to the Buddha, and he used a venomous nail called "like a calf's navel"

After filling the gaps with poison, he thought, 'If Gautama can endure it, that's good. If not, I'll smear poison on his feet.' Then he went to the Teacher and asked for forgiveness. The Teacher knew his mind and transformed the bones below his knees into crystal. That person pretended to pay homage to the Buddha's feet, and in order to apply the poison, he scratched at the feet, but touched the nature of crystal stone, so his nail broke. The poison fell in front of everyone, and he said with shame, 'Those who take refuge in the Buddha will not fall into the lower realms.' You said that, so I take refuge in you. If I fall into the lower realms, that would be a lie.' Then, not long after, as Devadatta was walking on the ground, a little bit of hellfire emerged from the ground and touched his foot, so he shouted "Ts'ao, ts'ao" and ran. Immediately, the ground split open, and his body fell into it. The flames of the Avici hell covered his body, and he was in great pain. Crying, he called out to Ananda, saying, 'I'm being burned!' The venerable Ananda said, 'You should seek refuge in the Buddha.' He also believed because he had seen the hellfire with his own eyes, and said, 'From the depths of my bones, I also seek refuge in the Buddha.' After saying that, his body fell into hell. He will remain in Avici hell for one great kalpa. It was prophesied that in hell, at the time of death, the fruit of uttering refuge from within the bones will cause him to become a Pratyekabuddha named 'Bone Body' in a future life. Third, the two supreme ones observing the state of hell: Later, at another time, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana went to observe the state of hell. Maudgalyayana rained down pillars of rain as thick as pestles and chariot axles in the Avici hell, but they were all dried up by the heat of the hellfire and did not fall to the ground. Shariputra, with the samadhi of faith, filled the hell with water. Maudgalyayana said, 'Devadatta, come here!' As a result, hundreds and thousands came. Maudgalyayana said, 'Devadatta, the brother of the Bhagavan, come here!' Then he came and prostrated at the feet of one of the two supreme ones. When asked if he was suffering, he said, 'Above all the general suffering of Avici hell, there is additional suffering.'
