One should rely on six things: residing in a suitable place, having few desires, being content, abandoning many activities, having pure morality, and abandoning discursive thoughts such as desire. Second, the method of practice is to rely on the eight applications that abandon the five faults, which will be explained below. Therefore, the stages of calm abiding are the nine states of mind. First, focusing the mind on the object of focus is to place the mind. To maintain that continuously is to continuously place the mind. When the mind wanders elsewhere due to discursive thoughts, cutting off that wandering and again focusing the mind on the object of focus is to restore and place the mind. Again, continuing to cultivate that is to closely place the mind. If one becomes weary of meditation, remembering the benefits of samadhi and meditating again is to tame the mind. If one is distracted by external circumstances, remembering the faults of distraction, such as "This distraction makes my mind unserviceable in the past and present," and so on, and generating aversion to distraction, and then placing the mind evenly on the object of focus, is to pacify the mind. When discursive thoughts such as attachment, sorrow, and regret arise, knowing that the object from which they arise has no essence, and thus those thoughts naturally subside, is to closely pacify the mind. After that, when one is diligent, dullness and excitement do not arise; when one is not diligent, when dullness and excitement arise, diligently cultivating with effort is to make the mind one-pointed. After that, even without effort, when one abides in clarity and emptiness in a one-pointed state, relaxing effort and placing the mind in equanimity is called equanimity, which is the accomplishment of the ninth state of mind. By becoming accustomed to that, these winds that flow internally and externally turn to benefit the body, and a bliss of physical pliancy arises in the body, and the mind also becomes very serviceable, so a bliss of mental pliancy also arises, and thus one obtains the actual, special calm abiding. Although there are many things to examine in these, our own system is that when the ninth state of mind is accomplished, actual calm abiding is accomplished. Second, as for higher seeing, there are two ways in which it arises from the treatises of the perfections, and the uncommon tantric way. First, the former mainly focuses on analytical meditation.

The method for that appears in many sutras, such as the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. The way it works is that, relying on listening, one understands the meaning of emptiness, and relying on the investigation of thought-arisen wisdom, one repeatedly generates conviction. When the perception of emptiness becomes very strong, one temporarily cultivates shamatha (calm abiding). Whether or not one has attained pliancy, one accomplishes the ninth stage of abiding in the mind. Then, in the state of shamatha, one focuses on external and internal objects such as the five skandhas, and recalls the conclusions that were previously determined by thought-arisen wisdom. One mixes that stream of conviction that these things appear even though they do not exist with shamatha, and rests slightly in non-grasping. Again, one repeats this, alternating the conviction of insight and shamatha in meditation. When, in the state of shamatha that rests in non-grasping on that object, the clarity of emptiness lasts longer, one reduces investigation. When the clarity of emptiness becomes smaller, one increases investigation. Finally, when the clarity of emptiness becomes unwavering, one abandons investigation and meditates on the union of shamatha and vipashyana, except for a few mental activities that stimulate clarity. For this, there are two ways: meditating on all objects as a single whole, and, as mentioned above, the yogi gradually trains by obtaining stable clarity in the earlier stages according to the basic order, and then generating clarity in the later stages. These details can be learned from Kamalashila's three stages of the Bhavanakrama (Stages of Meditation) and its meaning, and from ancient reliable treatises such as the translator Yeshe De's "Means of Generating Vipashyana." The second is the non-conceptual dharani, and according to the intention of the Mahayana Uttaratantra Shastra and others, one enters into seeking the definitive meaning of the sutras with the merit of excellent faith. Relying on listening, one well ascertains the state of the Tathagatagarbha (Buddha-nature), because one understands that the Buddha's body pervades all knowable objects without near or far, one is certain that all realms are pervaded by the teacher, and therefore one is never separated from the teacher, and thus one remembers the Buddha. Seeing all sentient beings as having the essence of the Buddha, one generates love and great compassion for the reason of being of the same kind as oneself. Knowing that all samsara and nirvana are manifestations of the mind.
