If one says that ultimate reality exists, one falls into one extreme. They say that. Listen, the meaning of that is this: If one asserts that no dharma exists ultimately, one falls into one extreme, because all ultimately existing dharmas exist ultimately. If one asserts that all dharmas exist ultimately, one falls into one extreme, because conventional dharmas do not exist ultimately. Similarly, if one asserts that all ultimately existing dharmas exist conventionally, one falls into one extreme, because ultimately existing dharmas do not exist conventionally. If one asserts that no dharma exists conventionally, one falls into one extreme, because all conventional dharmas exist conventionally. Therefore, one should also accept the scriptural citations of the faults of not understanding the distinction between the two truths, which will appear below, and the benefits of understanding. With this reasoning, in Maitreya's Ornament of the Sutras, it says, "Therefore, the Buddha is neither existent nor is he said to be nonexistent." One should understand that this also refers to that meaning. If it is not like that, it contradicts the Uttaratantra. Here it is said: Although the stars of evil intelligence are many, they cannot cause the lotus garden of profound definitive meaning to flourish. They cannot dispel the thick darkness of wrong views, they cannot illuminate the ground of the Buddha's teachings. The single sun of the Fifth Council simultaneously illuminated the ground of the Buddha's teachings, caused the lotus garden of profound definitive meaning to flourish, and dispelled the darkness of wrong views. This is an intermediate verse. Again, some say: In Nagarjuna's Root Wisdom of the Middle Way, "impermanent and not discontinuous," because it appears in the praise of the Buddha, therefore there is no Buddha of permanence, stability, peace, and Yungdrung. The meaning of that is this: It is said that the dharmas of dependent origination are neither permanent nor discontinuous. If it is not like that, if the noble Nagarjuna does not accept the Buddha of permanence, stability, and Yungdrung, then in the Hundred Treatises on Wisdom, "The supreme state of Yungdrung, if one does not strive on the basis of goodness, all the perfections seen and unseen, tremble like bubbles of water," and in the Praise of the Middle Way, "How can you abandon the directly contradictory, your own nature, the Dharmakaya, which is permanent, stable, and peaceful?" Therefore, please do not slander Nagarjuna. Again, some say:

It is said, "Looking at the Dharmakaya as permanent, one transforms into permanence." Furthermore, the explanation of permanence and annihilation views refers to the fact that non-Buddhists believe in permanence for things for which the self-nature of the individual is not established, and they view impermanent things such as Ishvara and Brahma as permanent. This is called the permanence view. The Charvakas view things that exist, such as past and future lives and karmic results, as non-existent, which is called the annihilation view. If one views impermanent things as impermanent and permanent things as permanent, which sutra explains that going along with annihilation and permanence views? Which tantra speaks of it? Which treatise is it taken from? By what reasoning is it established? When asked this, they reply: "There is no fortune to see profound sutras, let alone tantras. It is taken from treatises that fulfill one's own desires, and it is established by the reasoning of non-Buddhists." Furthermore, some say, "There is a Buddha who is spontaneously accomplished without arising or ceasing, but there is no permanent Buddha." This is like saying there is heat and burning but no fire, or there is dampness and moisture but no water. Because any dharma that does not arise or cease is the nature of permanence, this is established by scripture and reasoning. Furthermore, some think that there are few who believe in a permanent Buddha, and many who believe there is not, so they say to follow the majority. Well then, in the world, there are few who act according to dharma and many who do not, so should we follow them? Furthermore, some say, "Many people who believe there is no permanent Buddha have benefited beings, have many disciples, possess clairvoyance, are long-lived, and can fly in the sky, so we should follow them." Well then, after the Buddha passed into nirvana, it is said that the bhikshu Mahadeva did not have such a large gathering of followers, so should we follow him? Various non-Buddhists are long-lived by the power of the wind vessel, and others have defiled clairvoyance, can fly in the sky, can draw mandalas, and can produce fire from dust, so is it reasonable to follow them? Furthermore, some say, "If there is a permanent Buddha, then sentient beings must have a Buddha. If sentient beings have a Buddha, then that is enough, so what is the point of striving on the path?" The answer to that is, sentient beings are Buddhas.
