When saying these things, both you and I will be implicated in making mistakes. Instead of saying there is not, but saying there is, just like there is treasure underground, it is not enough just to have the treasure; the treasure must be revealed to be effective, so the work of digging must be done. This is how it is explained in the sutras using metaphors. In the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra*, it also says: "Why churn milk but not water? Because there is no essence in water." This is explained using metaphors. If sentient beings did not have Buddha-nature, then effort on the path would become meaningless. Precisely because sentient beings have Buddha-nature, in order to manifest what has not yet been manifested, one must make great effort to accumulate merit and wisdom. Therefore, among the three philosophical schools that arose in Tibet, one should abandon the view that sentient beings are Buddhas and the assertion that sentient beings do not have Buddha-nature. Third, one should accept that sentient beings have Buddha-nature, rather than saying that sentient beings are not Buddhas. That sentient beings have Buddha-nature means that they have the Dharmakāya, not the Rūpakāya, because the Dharmakāya is unconditioned, while the Rūpakāya is conditioned. Regarding this, some say: "In the *Tathāgatagarbha Sūtra* and the *Uttaratantra*, it says: 'The Buddha in the lotus, honey in the honeycomb, essence in the husk, gold in impurity, treasure and sprouts in the earth, fruit in the peel, the body of a king in rags, a ruler in the womb of a wicked woman, and a precious image in the earth—just as these are obscured by adventitious stains of affliction, so too does this element reside in sentient beings.' This is said as a metaphor and is provisional in meaning. If the metaphor described there were definitive in meaning, then the Tathāgatagarbha would become a collection of lumps and grains." Their meaning is this: Seeing the Buddha in the lotus is obscured by the lotus; seeing the barley and other fruits in the husk is obscured by the husk. According to this reasoning, the nine metaphors also apply in the same way: the Tathāgatagarbha exists in sentient beings, but is obscured by the stains of their respective afflictions. This is a metaphor of obscurer and obscured, not applied in meaning as it is in the metaphor. Nowadays, many who claim to be scholars take metaphors to be the characteristics of definitions.
