Therefore, the noble truths are established. Some say: If sentient beings have the Tathāgatagarbha, then it is the same as the "self" of the non-Buddhists. This argument also occurred in the past when the Blessed One was alive. There are two ways in which the Blessed One showed that the Tathāgatagarbha and the "self" of the non-Buddhists are not the same. The first is, as stated in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: Mahāmati asked: The Blessed One has spoken of the Tathāgatagarbha in other sūtras. The Blessed One said that it is intrinsically luminous, perfectly pure, and has been perfectly pure from the beginning. It possesses the thirty-two marks and is present within the bodies of all sentient beings. The Blessed One said that it is like a precious jewel wrapped in a dirty cloth, wrapped in the cloth of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, covered by the stains of desire, hatred, and ignorance, and defiled by the stains of false discriminations. If it is said to be permanent, constant, and enduring, Blessed One, how is this statement of the Tathāgatagarbha different from the "self" spoken of by the non-Buddhists? Blessed One, the non-Buddhists also say that the "self" is permanent, the agent, the performer of qualities, all-pervasive, and indestructible. They thus proclaim the "self." The Blessed One answered the differences in five ways. First, the way in which the Tathāgatagarbha is taught in order to avoid being the same as the "self" of the non-Buddhists and to avoid the fear of no-self is: The Blessed One taught: Mahāmati, my teaching of the Tathāgatagarbha is not the same as the "self" spoken of by the non-Buddhists. Mahāmati, the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, teach the Tathāgatagarbha with terms such as emptiness, the ultimate reality, nirvāṇa, signlessness, and wishlessness, in order to have children avoid the state of being frightened by no-self. By teaching through the means of the Tathāgatagarbha, it shows the realm of non-discrimination, the sphere of activity without appearance. To this, Mahāmati

Therefore, great Bodhisattvas who appear in the future and present should not be attached to the self. Secondly, the Tathagatagarbha and the non-self of phenomena are taught as having the same meaning but different names. The way in which it is said to be different from the self of the non-Buddhists is as follows: Again, in that very text, it says: "Great wisdom, for example, a potter makes various kinds of vessels from a single lump of clay dust with hands, craftsmanship, and both hands, as well as water, thread, and diligence. Great wisdom, similarly, the Tathagatas also reverse all characteristics of discriminating the non-self of phenomena. Those who are skilled in wisdom and means explain the Tathagatagarbha in various ways, or they may explain non-self. Like a potter, they explain with various kinds of words and letters. Therefore, great wisdom, explaining the Tathagatagarbha is not the same as explaining the self of the non-Buddhists." Thirdly, in order to quickly lead those who adhere to the self of the non-Buddhists to Buddhahood, the Tathagatagarbha is explained, and the way in which it is said to be similar to the self of the non-Buddhists is as follows: Again, in that very text, it says: "Great wisdom, thus the Tathagatas, in order to guide those who are attached to the self of the non-Buddhists, reveal the Tathagatagarbha by explaining the Tathagatagarbha. Those who have minds fallen into the view of discriminating a false self, possessing the intention of abiding in the realm of the three liberations, will quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Great wisdom, for that reason, the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly and completely enlightened Buddhas, reveal the Tathagatagarbha. Therefore, this is not the same as the explanation of the self of the non-Buddhists." Fourthly, in order to avert the view of the self of the non-Buddhists, it is advised that the Tathagatagarbha should follow the non-self. Again, in that very text, it says: "Great wisdom, therefore, in order to avert the views of the non-Buddhists,
