I cannot ascertain; how can I determine through direct perception (pratyakṣa) what is not the word of the Buddha? It is only when I directly see someone fabricating these texts that it is conclusive. Otherwise, because I do not possess clairvoyance, I do not know which are the words of the Buddha. Those who believe that certain texts are the words of the Buddha do so because they trust the transmissions from qualified lamas. But there is no historical record of any later translators receiving these teachings directly from the Buddha. Even through rational analysis, the Buddha's teachings are spoken in various languages. Because they are complete teachings, they appear according to the inclinations of the disciples. In one teaching, to suit the inclinations of different beings, there are various elaborate and concise words, as well as hidden and non-hidden meanings. Therefore, how can one distinguish which are the words of the Buddha by clinging to one particular text and judging whether others conform to it? Merely because there are modes of expression such as the beginning of the sutra, the audience, etc., it is not certain that it is the word of the Buddha. If someone is skilled at fabricating texts, he can add beginnings and so on. If he does not pretend that it was spoken by the Buddha, but clearly states that he wrote it himself, then it does not count as fabricating the Buddha's word. If one analyzes the wording, one will find that some texts bear traces of being translated from Chinese, and the style of the words in the sutras and commentaries is similar to or different from that of earlier Chinese texts. However, the translation style of the translators and the sutras and commentaries also contain various original words of the Buddha. Unless we have already seen these contents also appear in the sutras, how can we distinguish between sutras and treatises by looking at the wording? If one analyzes the meaning, who would fabricate a tantra that contradicts the views of the Three Baskets (tripitaka) and the Four Classes of Tantra (tantra-catuṣṭaya)? Even if it seems contradictory, it is like the statements 'kill the father and mother,' etc., which are explained in the tantras in six ways. Therefore, it is difficult to determine whether the literal meaning of these statements is correct, and how can one conclude that they are not the words of the Buddha? In the tantras, some are secret tantras that need to be explained, and some are non-secret tantras. Some need to have their true meaning and literal meaning explained, some have perfect combinations, and some sound awkward. For example, in texts like the 'Concise Tantra' (saṃkṣiptatantra), in order to break attachment to words, the seventh case is intentionally expressed using the second case, etc., although its words and meanings are complete. There are also some that are like easy-to-understand and fluent Tibetan writings and Bonpo treasure texts, which are all to suit the capacities of the disciples. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is due to the power of (Buddha's) teachings. The content taught varies in depth, the way of instruction is sometimes clear and sometimes not, and because different places have different terminologies, it is impossible to understand it only from the literal meaning. Therefore, such contents are difficult to verify and difficult to determine. If you say that the Buddha's words are not the Buddha's words, you will create the evil karma of slandering the Dharma. Therefore, the Nyingma (Old Translation School) people do not arbitrarily slander Buddhist scriptures and treatises. I also remain neutral and will not draw conclusions presumptuously, because it is difficult to find conclusive evidence to make a judgment. If you examine the words and sentences, it is easy to distinguish which are written by scholars and which are vulgar words. But it is difficult to determine whether it is the Buddha's words based on these alone, because the Buddha's teachings will have various expressions and meanings according to the different aptitudes of sentient beings. Just as Maitreya Bodhisattva said: 'Like the cool, sweet, soft, and light water that comes from the great clouds, it produces various tastes due to its combination with soil, salt, etc. Similarly, the water of the Eightfold Noble Path comes from the vast cloud of compassion, and has various tastes according to the differences in the aptitudes of sentient beings.' Similarly, the letters of mantras do not necessarily have to be in Sanskrit. Because there are mantras blessed by various languages of gods, dragons, humans, etc., it is not necessarily limited to Sanskrit. The *Vimalaprabha Sutra* says: 'Those who understand everything do not need to analyze sounds and non-sounds too much. Even using various inferior dialects, they can always enter the path of the great ones.' 'Due to the power of the faith of sentient beings, in order to benefit all sentient beings, for the supreme Buddha's words, those who are obsessed with grammar and the complex phonetic structures created by the Nagas gain nothing but arguments.' And, 'For animals, hungry ghosts, asuras, the poor, gods, humans, saints, Tibetans, etc., the three situations that happened in the past, future, and present, and the constant truth, (Buddha) has declared.' 'Using their respective languages, all sentient beings in the three realms are led to the right path without omission.' 'This brings happiness and retribution, it is the language of the all-knowing, not the language of the gods.' For example, there are not many overlapping letters in Sanskrit, but in Kalachakra, there are mantras such as the 'Tenfold Powerful One' (Tibetan: རྣམ་བཅུ་དབང་ལྡན།, Sanskrit Devanagari: कालचक्र, Sanskrit Romanization: Kālacakra, Chinese literal meaning: Wheel of Time), etc., and the longevity deity of the Nyingma school, 'Aye' (Tibetan: ཨྱེ, Sanskrit Devanagari: , Sanskrit Romanization: , Chinese literal meaning: ), etc., are very numerous, and from the perspective of words and meanings, 'Om' (Tibetan: ཨཱོཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओं, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om) also has a long sound. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
