Manifestation. Are such words and meanings the same or different? To thoroughly and exhaustively analyze these, needless to say, it is difficult for fools, even the wise find it hard to understand. I have come to fully understand these through the power of study. However, because people are attached and hateful, and foolish, they despise me. Whether I understand such things or not, the Protector (mGon-po, referring to the Buddha) and his retinue know.' He said this, which is able to establish that one can obtain a correct understanding of each definite word. After translating in this way, if one does not translate in this way in the future, one will not be able to express the words and meanings well. In the second chapter of 'Sound Theory' and so on, the method of translating by combining Sanskrit and Tibetan in this way is in accordance with the essential points stipulated by decree. All later translators followed this method and translated accordingly. When comparing the extremely vast and profound sutras and tantras with the commentaries written by Indian pandits, it is amazing to scholars that there is no need to modify anything from the words or meanings as before. Some people think that 'meaning translation' (don 'gyur) only expresses the meaning to be expressed, and the form of the words does not exactly correspond to Sanskrit, but this is not the case. It refers to translating without losing both the words and meanings after fully understanding the meaning to be expressed, even though the Sanskrit and Tibetan languages are different, the meanings are the same. For example, the single syllable 'go' has nine meanings, such as earth, cow, and vajra. If one does not know the specific meaning of 'go' in that context, translation errors may occur. Therefore, many later translations have errors in meaning and are not well-composed. In the past, translators and pandits together translated the scriptures into Tibetan, and then proofread them to ensure there were no errors. These were determined through teaching and discussion, so if it is said to be an early, unerring translation, it is very trustworthy, just like all the texts of the Vinaya Sutra. Some people, out of attachment and hatred, consider later translations to be more important than earlier translations, which is an unreasonable prejudice. For example, in texts such as the 'Root Verses on the Middle Way' (dBu ma rtsa shes), Pa-tshab said, 'Translations that should not be modified were modified.' This is based on texts such as the 'Entering the Middle Way' (Madhyamakāvatāra), which indicates that there are translation errors that do not conform to the views of the noble father and son (Avalokiteśvara and Mañjuśrī). Even if there are no translation errors, it is acceptable to correct textual errors, but if one examines what was actually modified that should not have been modified, one finds that all instances of 'svabhāva' (ngo bo nyid) were translated as 'rang bzhin' (nature), which is only a difference in translation, and there is not a single instance where the meaning is different from before. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The root verses of 'Fundamental Wisdom' (rTsa shes rtsa ba) modified by Pa Tsha, and the root verses in the commentary of 'Madhyamaka Illuminating Lamp' (dbU ma sher sgron legs ldan 'byed), will become clear if compared with the old translation. By this example, if we examine the old and new translations, we will find that there is no translation that can compare with the old translation in terms of profound meaning, easy-to-understand words, and far-reaching influence. Moreover, most of the inner and outer tantras were slightly proofread on the original basis with reference to the Sanskrit original. The translator's signature of the old translation was either missing or hidden, and replaced by the biased signatures of later translators such as Rin bzang. The reason for the errors lies in this. Although there are translations by later scholars that are free of errors, the classics translated by many translators and pandits in the old translation period are incomparable. All later translators, such as Rin bzang, Ngog Lo Legs pa'i shes rab, Sakya Pandita, and Bu ston, also regarded it as the standard and used it as the basis to translate the previously untranslated classics in the same translation style as the old translation. It is difficult for later translations to achieve this. Even the translations of great scholars such as Bu ston had to be revised many times by later scholars such as Situ Panchen Dharma Kara. Nowadays, judging the quality of translations by merely trusting some Chinese conjunctions and individual words, without in-depth understanding, is like not being able to cross a small stream but boasting of being able to swim across the ocean. Therefore, great achievers such as Rin bzang and Pa Tsha did not have the intention of despising the old translations, but rather had a heart of gratitude. It was only later biased people who added various self-praising words in order to exalt themselves. Similarly, in catalogs such as the 'Phang thang ma Catalog' (dkhar chag 'phang thang ma), the translations of treatises such as 'Pramāṇavārttika' (tshad ma rnam 'grel), because they were not proofread, most of the unsigned translations were given the signatures of later translators. Scholars have taught and studied by comparing commentaries and other materials, and have finally determined the content of the translations. However, they do not understand that all of this comes from the kindness of the old translations, and instead despise the old translations, which is a shameless act of ingratitude. Therefore, these sutras and tantras translated during the old translation period, although they are immeasurable in the Buddha's teachings, contain profound and vast meanings, and possess the essence of the complete path, like refined gold. These are all due to the kindness of the incarnate translators and pandits, and are the blessings of Tibet. Everyone should understand this. If we examine this carefully, we will understand that whether or not it is the Buddha's teaching cannot be determined by ordinary people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
