In the commentary on 'Thatness': 'What is this? Is it the self-nature of things? Or is it not?' It is said, 'It speaks of 'no letter,' the self-nature of the absence of things, which is the nature of the Ālayavijñāna (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པ།, Sanskrit: ālayavijñāna, English: storehouse consciousness) that is the basis of all, appearing as all-pervading space.' By meditating on such a protector, wisdom will arise. As mentioned above, this refers to the appearance of the basis of meaning, not the Ālayavijñāna, which is one of the eight consciousnesses. These are not considered illusory appearances, but purely manifest appearances, not even symbols. It transforms into the nature of union (Tibetan: ཟུང་དུ་འཇུག་པ།, English: Yuganaddha), and becomes the great body of the Victorious One. Therefore, in the Hevajra Tantra, it is said: 'The heavens, the underground, and the surface of the earth, in an instant, transform into one body.' This is the main meaning secretly taught in the Mantra Vehicle, so it is difficult to talk about with someone who lacks faith and wisdom. Now, the meaning of 'manifest' will be explained, because if one uses a path that does not conform to valid cognition (Tibetan: ཚད་མ།, Sanskrit: pramāṇa, English: valid cognition), one will go astray. Therefore, here, it needs to be determined by valid cognition. As explained by the teacher Dharmakirti, valid cognition is divided into two types: direct perception and inference. In this Secret Vehicle, there are only these two types of valid cognition. In the sadhana of the Kalachakra, it says: 'The visualization of the deity is direct perception and inference, the two aspects. By practicing direct perception, one can attain numerous complete Sambhogakayas, like stars in the sky.' 'Without direct perception, inference is like a dead body, and no inference can be made. Therefore, for yogis whose minds are not yet mature, looking at paintings, etc., is the purpose of practice.' This direct perception is not understood through the ordinary sensory perception of ordinary people or the yogic perception of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, but is determined through the special yogic perception of meditating on the inner Thatness. That is, it is not an appearance contaminated by various illusory cognitions, but the nature that remains unchanged from sentient beings to Buddhas, which is called Thatness. In the 'Oral Instructions of Manjushri,' it says: 'All phenomena, from form, etc., to the nature of omniscience (Tibetan: ཀུན་མཁྱེན།, English: omniscience), are pure like the center of the sky, which is the non-dual wisdom that is profound and clear.' 'That is the meditation on non-existence, non-existence, separated from all things, not bound by realms and sources, self-luminous by nature, like the sky that is pure from the beginning.'

All phenomena have abandoned their characteristics. Dharma and Dharmata (法性, the nature of Dharma) are also non-existent. Having no substance, they are like the sky. Free from all words and letters. It has become the essence of time, directions, and all Dharmas. Not the body, nor speech, nor mind, not the desire realm, not the form realm, nor the formless realm. Not the four elements either. Therefore, it is nowhere, not abiding anywhere, hence it is equality itself. Such a great Vajradhara (金刚持, Diamond Holder), is the supreme Dharmata of all Dharmas. It is the entity to be accomplished by means, completely detached from all speculation. Possessing immeasurable perfect causes, the rays of Mahamudra (大手印, Great Seal) shine brightly, maturing self and others with its rays. The supreme non-dual nature. Even the great Vajradhara cannot express its great form. As stated above, it is the direct perception of the inner Suchness (真如, Thusness). In the Vajra Heart Commentary, there are the direct perceptions of the senses, the direct perceptions of the mind, the direct perceptions of yoga, and the direct perceptions of self-awareness. Having the characteristics of showing, entering, obtaining, and experiencing. As it is said, then, what is the essence of direct perception? It is that when practicing the yoga of Suchness, emptiness, and compassion, with the five senses such as the physical eye, one clearly sees all forms of wisdom like stars in the sky, this wisdom is free from conceptualization and is not deluded. In the Vajra Heart Commentary, it is said: 'Here, the object of meditation in the sky is like a dream, transcending the nature of minute particles. To fully know it is to meditate on the absence of substance, seeing the appearance of the mind free from conceptualization. That which is free from conceptualization and not deluded is called direct perception.' As it is said. Then, by what means can one see it? In the Chakrasamvara Tantra, it is said: 'In a solitary retreat place, completely abandon all duality. Turn the eyes upwards, focusing the mind between the eyebrows. The practitioner will initially see endless darkness.' As it is said. Also, how does one see it? In the same Tantra, it is said: 'First one will see darkness, second like white and smoke, third see like fireflies, fourth like hibiscus flowers, fifth cloudless wisdom, abandoning the true knowledge of self and others. With the yoga of constant practice, focus the mind on the wheel of the heart.' As it is said. In the Vajra Tent Tantra, it is said: 'First one sees a scene like clouds.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
