If one merely clings to the notion of focusing on characteristics as objects, and cannot be separated from the mind that grasps at such notions, it becomes a great view that is the nature of generating inexhaustible obscurations. As it says in the sutra: 'Kasyapa, it is easy to abide in the view of a person as large as Mount Meru, but it is not so for one with pride in their understanding to view emptiness.' Why is that? Kasyapa, all views that arise are emptiness. Kasyapa, whoever only views emptiness cannot be restored. Therefore, clinging to and fixating on emptiness with an object is said to deviate from the Buddha's teachings, as stated by the Buddha himself. However, if one asks, Nagarjuna said, 'Without relying on conventional truth, the ultimate truth cannot be realized.' This shows that realization must be based on analytical discernment of negation and affirmation, is that so? It is not so. The meaning of that statement is that the ultimate truth must first be realized by relying on the manner of expression and what is expressed, just as a child is shown the moon by pointing with a finger. This only shows that it must be realized in that way, but it is not said that it must be realized by examining with the reasoning of speculation. Therefore, as it is disparaged with many names, such as 'the speculator is like something rotten, to be distinguished,' one is driven into the straits of speculation. Circling around the rocky mountain of negation and affirmation, one hurls one's own innate wisdom onto the path of slander. Thinking that one has eliminated the two extremes by mental analysis is like a silkworm binding itself with its own saliva, making it very difficult to arrive at the state of the nature of reality. Because the nature of reality is inconceivable, it cannot be represented by terms, and terms abide in the essence of conceptual imputation. As it says in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: 'Individual self-awareness is the sphere of characteristics, inexpressible, where terms are completely cut off, free from contention, it is the ultimate dharma, that is the characteristic that transcends all speculation.' Therefore, the Great Perfection of Naturalness is fastened with three ways of abiding, the key points are subdued with three ways of looking, and through the path of the six lamps, the nature of reality is directly seen as being free from mental judgment, so the difference in the path is as great as the sky and the earth. As it says in the Drathalgyur Tantra: 'The ultimate meaning is beyond mind, the senses simultaneously self-liberate, through the key point of direct seeing, one's own established tenets collapse, without attachment or clinging to anything, truly tasting the flavor of the nature of reality, without the basis of the three realms of samsara, like space dissolving into space itself, the supreme yoga is also like that.' These are the reasons. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reflecting deeply, Je Sakya Pandita (ས་པཎ་, Sakya Pandita) stated: 'The view of Ati Yoga (ཨ་ཏི་ཡོ་ག་, Ati Yoga) is wisdom (ཡེ་ཤེས་, jnana), not a vehicle (ཐེག་པ་, yana).' However, although it is well explained from the perspective of realizing the profound state of view without error, it is wrong to say that it is not a vehicle. Depending on the incompleteness, slight completeness, and complete completeness of the wisdom of Hearers (ཉན་རང་, Shravaka), Solitary Realizers (བྱང་སེམས, Pratyekabuddha), Bodhisattvas (བྱང་སེམས, Bodhisattva), and Buddhas (སངས་རྒྱས, Buddha), they are established as the four noble ones. Furthermore, in the Uttaratantra (རྒྱུད་བླ་མ་, Uttaratantra Shastra), it says: 'The form of form is inferior, intermediate, and supreme like the sky.' Just as the goodness or badness of a container does not affect the sky within it, the nature of reality (ཆོས་ཉིད་, dharmata) which is naturally pure does not change, but due to the strength of separation from the obscuring adventitious stains, that wisdom will manifest appropriately according to the occasion. Therefore, there is no contradiction in establishing it as a vehicle, because the explanation of the word 'vehicle' applies to both 'lifting with this' and 'lifting here'. If you think that the three noble ones who are not Buddhas do not have wisdom, then that is the end of it. Since all the arrangements of the stages and paths arise on the basis of the single wisdom from seeing a little to seeing completely, establishing it as a vehicle is the profound intention of the sutras and tantras. As it is said in the Avatamsaka Sutra (སངས་རྒྱས་ཕལ་པོ་ཆེ་, Avatamsaka Sutra): 'The wisdom of the Buddha is the Great Vehicle.' Furthermore, some say this: 'There is an error in your basic position. According to the new tradition, most of the wise and accomplished masters of India, such as Nagarjuna (ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་, Nagarjuna), and especially the view of Dharmakirti (ཆོས་ཀྱི་གྲགས་པ་, Dharmakirti), is that the alaya-vijnana (ཀུན་གཞིའི་རྣམ་ཤེས་, alaya-vijnana) is un-obscured in nature and indeterminate.' Just as a mirror is empty of images when it is in its own nature, the alaya is empty of the seven consciousnesses and their mental factors when it is in its own nature. Just as a mirror can reflect any image without losing its clarity, the alaya can hold the imprints of samsara, nirvana, and the path without losing its capacity. Just as the clarity of a mirror is indeterminate when it has not encountered an object, the alaya is indeterminate, not falling into either samsara or nirvana, when it is not disturbed by the activities of delusion and liberation. Your school, however, asserts that the ground is primordially pure (ཀ་དག་, kadag) and originally liberated (ཡེ་གྲོལ་, yerol). Are the alaya and primordial purity the same or different? If they are the same, then the alaya is the common basis of both samsara and nirvana, and therefore has co-emergent ignorance (ལྷན་ཅིག་སྐྱེས་པའི་མ་རིག་པ་, lhenchig kyepe marigpa), which is the root of all ignorance, and therefore does not fulfill the meaning of primordial purity and original liberation. If the alaya and primordial purity are different, then they become two minds, which contradicts the view of a single continuum. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
